Do you use your NS4G as your primary mp3 player?

Hi everyone,

I'm coming back to android from WM7, previously on a HTC Arrive which I used fairly heavily to listen to mp3's (average ~4 h of listening per day) in addition to being my daily phone. I browse the web for maybe an hour a day.

I picked up my NS4G about a week ago and have had mostly lack-luster battery life. Typically, I've found somewhere between 10-13 h of life based on this use. I had one strange day where I got 20 h, and I have no idea why. I use double-twist for my podcasts and spotify for music - listening to both in offline mode only. My work day is generally 10 h, so I'm always on edge whether I will be able to make it through the day.

Does anyone else use their NS4G as heavily as me for mp3s listening? If so, what kind of battery life are you seeing? I recently rooted and put matr1x kernel on in hopes of improving battery life, but haven't seen a ton of improvement yet (granted, this is my first day).

If I don't figure out how to improve this battery life situation, I may have to go back to my WM7 phone- which typically averaged closer to 18-20 h of battery life with the same use. I've contemplated going the back-up battery route- but I'd need to buy a battery charger for work and home and it just seems like a pain.

Thanks for your input.

I use mine as my primary mp3 player. Mainly using Google music and the tunein radio app. I have had this phone for about 6 months and the battery life has been horrible. Especially after this new update. I suggest using a different phone with better battery life if you can. Or just get used to always having to keep your phone on the charger.

Pick up a Seido 1750 extended life battery for it. I use my NS4G at work for around 8 hours as an mp3 player and when I leave it still has 70% left. Stock battery would need to be charged at that point. $30 on Amazon.com if you go that route, and you won't need to keep your stock battery on you, unless you really are a power user.

I use mine for mp3s, Spotify & Google music, but I leave it plugged in as much as possible & carry an extra battery all the time. The battery life is terrible on this phone, so if you can't plug in regularly or carry an extra battery, you might as well stick with your old phone.

Buy a Sansa Clip.

10 hours is pretty stellar for all day listening and assuming you have your cell radio on as well.

I use Google music and I stream Pandora daily and I c average battery life better than on gb without a doubt :)

Lately I have been. Spotify, Power Amp, Tune In, Stitcher, and Google Listen make it easy to use as one.

Personally I don't buy into "convergence". I like my iPod for music and my NS for most everything else mobile. Occasionally I'll have Google Music or Tune In going at low volume on my desk at work...but that's only for background. For running and driving this device is no good for me...too big, too tricky to work the screen when I'm running or driving, and the battery life is a joke. Besides...notifications and calls interrupt the flowwwww....

I use it as my only MP3 player, unless I use Spotify through my computer. I use Google music, and made most of my play list available "offline" which has helped a lot. During the week my battery gets crushed simply because my signal at work is weak at best. However, at home, with full bars and wifi I can get 14+ hours on the battery. That includes listening to music, emailing, and texting.

Thank you all for your input, I suspect that much of my issue has to do with the crappy radios on the phone. A big part of why I ordered this phone was that it was reviewed by many as having great battery life. Unfortunately, I may have to return this.

I use mine as my primary music player, except for when I'm exercising. Then it's my Sansa Clip.

I use mine for at least a few hours each day to stream Google Music. If I stream during my commute and then for awhile at my desk, it's pretty much guaranteed that I'll need to charge it by the early afternoon. Granted, that's more or less what I would expect since I'm streaming rather than playing anything offline. I normally just leave a micro-USB cable at work for charging.

If u use this phone to play music u have stored on the device I suggest u get player pro. This is way better than any music app I have come across.

Go Bucs!

It's all a matter of preference. I have used player pro and find power amp much more to my liking. Player pro doesn't even make my top 3. I paid for it and I don't even have it installed on my phone anymore. That should say something about how I feel.

While there was nothing I disliked about it, I didn't see anything that put it ahead of the others either. I will have to reinstall it to see if it was improved with updates...

OK, I made a couple of modifications that seem to have made a big difference. First, I changed my podcast app from doubletwist to doggcatcher and installed juice defender. Now, I'm in the middle of a heavy day of listening to podcasts and my battery life will last ~18 h. Much better! Perhaps I'll be keeping the phone after all. :)

I use Google music everyday for about 2 hours on my device. I use juice defender on an "aggressive" setting and I get 15 hours no problem.

I was wondering about this. I thought there might have been a way to deal with this, guess not.

I'm fully converged. mp3 player, radio, navigation device, web browser, mifi/wifi, and phone.

So basically
charger at work desk
charger in car dock
charger at home

Becomes the way of life...plugged in always. An extra battery doesn't hurt either. Easier to carry than a external battery pack, and doesn't fugly your phone by making it fatter.

I don't use it as my primary music player but recently I've used it quite a bit. I'm always out and about and I don't have my iPod on me a lot so I use my phone. I use power amp and I love it. If I didn't have an iPod I would def be able to use it as my primary player. I do have more music than I can store on here though :/
