Hi guys, please forgive me, but I searched everywhere, and cannot find an answer. I picked up the new nexus 7, and I do like it a lot, however it is my 3rd mobile OS experience, after iOS and WP8. Those other 2 would be able to view Excel files from my email with no extra effort, just click, and viewable. Im trying to the same with Nexus 7, but the little guy keeps saying "Document Viewer Failed to Open"..Am I missing something? thx.

Welcome to Android Central! I wonder if you may have set a default app to open Excel files that isn't working that well. Go to Settings/Apps, tap the menu button at the upper right, and tap "Reset app preferences." Then try to open that file again, and see if it gives you more options to open the file with. I suggest using Google Drive if you can.

What happens if you long press the attachment--does it give the option of downloading the file?

well, from the email, I can either "view" it or "save" it. If I view it. i get the message that "Document Viewer failed to open". If i clock on save, it says it saved, but no idea where the saved file is..

When you save it, it doesn't show up in your Downloads app or folder? Go to your App Drawer and find Downloads there. Alternatively, you could use a file manager app (like Total Commander) and navigate to the Downloads folder that way--there's a convenient shortcut on the main Total Commander screen.

I think the problem is that the Excel file isn't in a format that can be read by any of the apps you currently have on your device. You could try installing an office suite like Kingsoft, which should be able to read Excel files.

ok tried with another excel file, and works..so maybe the original file i was trying was too complicated or something..it was a spreadsheet from work

Are all of the Excel file you're trying to read from the same version of Office? Maybe one of them was .xlsx while the other was .xls from an older version.

It's a given that WP8 would be able to read Excel files without difficulty, since it's all Microsoft. The N7 might not be able to read everything out of the box, but remember that it comes pretty much barebones, without added preinstalled bloatware. That's what Google Play is for, to find the apps that will work for you.

Try downloading Kingsoft Office from Play. I think it can open Excel files.
