Does deleting and reinstalling Wechat destroy it's chat and contact list ?

Hello,
I have a xiaomi note 4x phone with Android ver. 6 which has the Wechat app on it. Unfortunately I can't sign onto that account, not sure if I had a crash or if the account was hacked. It happened about 10 days ago. The other apps of the phone seem to be ok.
I have already written 2 emails to support@wechat.com, I have waited 8 days now without getting any reply or help from anyone at that company. I joined this forum and hope someone here can give me some advice either as to how I can fix this problem or get the attention of someone at Wechat support. It's totally absurd that I should have to wait such a long time like this to get any help.
I was thinking to delete the Wechat app and reinstall it but wonder if that will trash all of my chat history and contact list. Or will that only affect the local copies of stuff and it will repopulate itself once the account is fixed ?? I don't want to do anything in haste if it will foul up things, so that's why I am asking first. Also, this brings up the issue of backing up things on my phone. I have double backups on my hard drives for desktop computing but this made me acutely aware that I need some way of backing up on my cell phone too.
I would appreciate any suggestions as I cannot only just keep on waiting on the support people at Wechat since I've heard nothing from them at all.
It's a major pain as I have some people who I want to contact but cannot do that since this Wechat is not working. Sure hope I can get my contact list back. I learned a super giant lesson and there is absolutely no way that I will not depend on only 1 app or way of contacting my contacts in the future.
Thanks for any help or advice you can give.

Your contact list will still be 'intact' as it's saved on the server side, BUT your chats will be wiped. In order for those to be preserved you need to manually initiate a chat back up either to another device or to a computer (done from within WeChat's settings in the Chats section). You can try clearing the app's Cache (not Data) and see if that helps.

Try logging into your account on another device or through their web interface to see if the problem is with the app on your device or if your account has another problem (might need to reset password or something).

I moved this from the Xiaomi forum to the Wechat forum for more specific traffic.
