Does Google Now require Google Calendar App?

I'm trying out a Google Calendar, Gmail, and Google Now combination to see how well Google Now works for me long-term. I do like the features that the Samsung Calendar has. If I switch to Samsung Calendar, will I miss out on any of the Google Now "awareness" that comes from using Google Calendar?

My understanding is that the Now "awareness" and "predictive" type features happen via server side integration with Gmail and Google Calendar. Is that a valid understanding, or do I still need the Google Calendar, Gmail, and Now app combination to get the most out of Now?

No, you won't miss out on any awareness. The Samsung Calendar syncs with your Google account, so, it is virtually the same data. Whatever you enter in the Samsung Calendar will magically show up on your Google Calendar too. :)
