I just jumped on the Surfshark VPN promo (2 years, $48), and I was wondering if keeping it on the entire time would sap a significant percentage of my battery, or would it be more of a passive drain, more along the lines of a launcher, or passive apps like Drawer.

Depends on your personal use and the specific VPN you're using. Just like any app, if it isn't properly coded or optimized, it can lead the processor to go rogue or consume resources faster than an optimized app. Also, depending on how much data you pass through it, it will vary the amount of processing it takes it (granted, most of the processing is done on the server side).

The only good answer for this arguably loaded question is: leave it on and compare to YOUR usual day.
