Hello people i have a question, I have a nexus 5 and I am on T-Mobile and i only have 500MB of data on my plan. The question is does keeping on my mobile data help with anything like better calls or faster text messages?

No. You need mobile data on to receive MMS messages (i.e., photos over the text messaging app), but you can always turn mobile data on temporarily to receive that MMS. Otherwise, if you have no need to be constantly connected to the web and the cloud, it's fine to keep mobile data off and toggle it on only when you need it.

You can also just limit background data usage. Settings>Data usage>3 dot button>Restrict background data (ckeckbox)

That would only cause the user to quickly blow through his 500GB of LTE at the beginning of the month. I think he wants to ration it for when he needs it. On plans that have unlimited data but limited LTE coverage this option is not really necessary. On plans with limited data (all speeds) it is very helpful because it prevents additional data billing by warning the user.
