Does my brand-new Note 10.1 2014 have a charging problem?

My new Note has just arrived, and I followed the instructions and started charging it. I'm slightly concerned because the battery charging icon came onto the screen for about 20 seconds and then disappeared - is that normal? If it disappears how will I know when the battery is fully charged? I was expecting the battery charging icon to remain visible.

EDIT: Just phoned the seller (Carphone Warehouse here in the UK) and have been told that the device is faulty. Maybe it's just in a kind of sleep mode???

To rule out the charger cable I have just tried a different one, and got the same result - however for the brief time that the charging icon was on the screen it appeared to show that the battery had charged somewhat because the green bar was higher. I'm confused!

Definitely not normal... exchange it while you can still do so easily... don't wait until you have to send it off for repair

Thank you Charles, I'll do that. Interestingly my Galaxy mobile phone (which I think is an S2.0) doesn't show the charging icon either after a few seconds, I have to switch it on to see what the charge is.

Right, if I touch the on/off button briefly it shows me the battery icon, which then fades away as I described earlier. The battery appears to be charging because the green bar is going up from what it was an hour ago. Maybe it is working normally after all? I say this because I am a tablet novice and my first thought is that I may be doing something wrong - such as staring at a blank screen when all I have to do is lightly touch the power button. My guess is that it's maybe just going into sleep mode? This is what my Galaxy phone does when it's charging.

I've just checked two more of our Samsung devices and they behave in the same way when charging - battery charging icon comes on for about 15 seconds then fades away. Battery status can be checked by briefly touching the power button.

Having spoken to Samsung technical support I was told that the charging icon should always be on (be it a tablet or a phone) - but clearly that is not consistent with any of the Samsung devices in my possession. Most odd.

Mine usually only shows for 15-20 seconds (maybe 30) and goes off.... IF it stayed on "forever" I would be concerned.... Another check is with tablet on, what does it show in top right corner of screen, be sure in "Settings" >> "General" >> "Battery" , "Show battery percentage" is tunred ON.

Also battery charge indicator screen will come on for about 5 seconds when you unplug charge cable with tablet off....

IF battery comes up to 100% after several hours on charger, I believe everything is ok, and you are misinterpreting what tablet is trying to indicate...

Battery page under Setting will also show who the power users are...

Thank you Dale - yes, that's what I'm seeing. I have just consulted some friends and they are the same, so it appears my tablet is in fact quite normal. It just seems odd that the seller's technical department and Samsung tech kept insisting that the charging icon should stay on the screen all the time when it's on charge, which as you say would be rather odd.

Samsung tech support and the repair stations are not known for having the most stellar people working there.....

Tell me about it - they were insisting it was faulty, even when I went and got one of my Galaxy phones and plugged that into charge - which they also suggested was an oddity.

That is normal charging behaviour. Hold the home button (the one just above the charger port) in for a second to pop up the charge indicator.

Yes, it seems to be charging quite nicely, 25% increase in the last two hours. Still, I'll leave it where it is overnight so that it has a long first charge.

Well, it finally completed its first charge at 5:30 AM - that's a whopping 16 hours!! I'm finding that a little scary.

If you used the wall plug from 220v it will settle at about 4hrs from 30% charge left. No harm will come to the battery if left plugged in overnight.

Thank you, it does seem to have settled. On the first day of use from a full first charge I did just basic light tasks such as configuring, e-mails etc and I got 7 1/2 hours to 25% charge remaining. I then plugged it in to charge and it was fully charged in 5 1/2 hours. I have made sure I am not running any tasks or settings which will drain the battery in the background.

Spot on. If you are hampered by the 5.5 hrs start recharge at 40% =3hrs to full
