Does NFC have to be left on to use Samsung Pay?

I finally got the install for the beta, but I was wondering
I know Samsung Pay can be used with MST devices, but does NFC still have to be left on to use Samsung Pay? Or can I leave it off?

I was wondering the same thing. My guess is that since NFC will only work with the NFC enabled card machines it shouldn't really be necessary for it be on all the time. But I mean unless you are paying for something every 5 minutes why not just turn it on when you're about to pay for something and turn it off when you're done.

I would imagine it can be left off as it's two separate connections. Problem would be that MST is older than NFC, so as the software improves and becomes more popular I would imagine NFC would be the main way to connect.

What device has MST available, just out of curiosity :)

Thanks :) so is this automatically turned on or do you need to turn it on through the settings? I have an S6 btw

Well Samsung Pay hasn't rolled out yet, is still in the beta phase which you can register to test it out. I think it should be coming out by the end of this month. You would have to set up Samsung Pay with your credit cards information and according to Samsung you can use it pretty much at any store that either uses the MST or NFC payment devices.

Yes it will work, if you notice when you use SP it will turn NFC on automatically then turn it off when you're done flawlessly. Love it. I don't like to keep NFC on all the time so it's perfect for me.

It works with nfc off. It turns itself on when you pull up the part to pay using Samsung pay then turns it off after youve paid.

You can turn it off or select to have the NFC only turn on when the SP is in use, then it will turn back off automatically when SP closes. You can select in OPTIONS. Since SPay uses MST, NFC doesn't have to be on, but it's nice that SP uses both technologies which makes Samsung Pay much better than Android and Apple Pay.

My sp only has settings not options and there's no way to set it to turn NFC on when sp activates. Can you explain where we can enable this feature?

From what I've read, Samsung Pay will turn on NFC for the transaction and then turn it back off again.

I contacted Samsung support about this. At least on the Galaxy S7, Samsung pay does NOT turn NFC on. I need to manually turn NFC on every time I want to use Samsung pay or use NFC for any payment. Furthermore, they said leaving NFC on all the time DOES drain the battery and I should not leave it on all day. I have confirmed that my battery drains faster when I leave NFC on all day. Hopefully this will help other users with all the misinformation out there about this topic.

Samsung Pay doesn't use NFC so it won't turn it on nor does it need to. I leave NFC turned off and it never turns on when I use Samsung Pay.

Samsung Pay supports both NFC and MTS. The gear s2 supports NFC so once Samsung implements it for the watch you will be able to use the watch at places that Take NFC based payments. And use you Galaxy phone for all other payments.

Samsung Pay toggles NFC on only while actively making a transaction then turns it off immediately when complete on all phone capable of using it. Obviously if you have NFC enabled it will stay that way. So turn it off Samsung Pay will take care of the rest.
