Does rooting mean you lose the benefits 2.2 (froyo) has over 2.1?

I dont know if I understand what happens by following the FAQ root instruction. Do you essentially revert the EVO to an earlier OS that then allows us to get Wifi Tether? Sorry for the newb question but I cant seem to find the right thread to clarify what happens when you root other than unlocking high levels of customization. All I want is more battery life and wifi tether essentially.

When you Root Reverting to 2.1 and all... you have the option to now Download the Root Version of a 2.2 Rom

So no you dont lose the Benefits of 2.2 you just need to return to 2.1 to regain Root and ability to flash...

I'd like to thank you for taking the time to read and attempt to understand the root process keep it up any questions like this most of us are more then willing to address...

I see, so once you go back to 2.1 rooted, there is a 2.2 build that you put on top of that which will then let you play with all the different roms and kernels that everyone here talks about. Looks like I have some homework this weekend...I dont want to spend too much time stock if I'm just going to have to relink all the facebook/gmail contacts and what not all over again.

Thanks for the answer!

Youll be able to relink them. Back up ur google contacts in gmail as well as using appbrain to backup all your apps. Good luck!

Once you go back to 2.1 you root. After you root with 2.1, the sky is the limit. pick a 2.2 rom and go nuts

I do suggest putting a rotted stock 2.2 rom then doing a nandroid backup. THEN flashing whatever rom your head desires.

Well a part of Rooting is unlocking Nandroid / Loading a Custom Recovery

This is the portion that lets you flash any EVO Specific Rom you like...

From 2.1 Roms to all 2.2 Roms believe me there are a ton of them

Here is the ROM LIST from our Friendly Neighborhood Devs at XDA

I need to ask are you tech Savvy / Computer Savvy in any way?

If so go ahead and Read the Stickies above about Rooting and Unrooting and such

To be perfectly honest its the best way to learn and know anything you need to know about your phone...

Disclaimer: Any Rooting process is filled with Risk and you do void warranty

Once Rooted and something happens to your phone though you can always revert to Stock with an RUU

I recommend the AC-Rom for starting out... This is close to Stock and you will get everything you asked for...

I'm definitely computer savy but I have never done coding or the like before...last time I had to use a command prompt regularly was running need for speed 1 on my pentium 1 133mhz hewlett packard haha. I have messed with phones before (did all the palm pre stuff with homebrewed apps etc.) but not that much...and was never really happy with that phone as there were always awful quirks.

As far as backing up contacts in gmail, how do I go about doing that?

Does the OTA update that my phone did this morning change anything? Or was my phone late to the party and iits been out for quite some time?

The nandroid backups looks like a nice feature to have when playing with different roms.

when you originally signed into GMail it syncs your contacts...

Under options if you go down to accounts and sync click on google make sure "contacts Gmail and Calender" are checked off then click sync

Nice, I never thought to click anything but the green dot next to google.

Also, thanks for the support. You guys are really psyching me up to do this. Seems like this is a great mod scene.

The user is asking for advice. Period. This is not an unrevoked discussion. Help or don't post.

If this turns into another one of those threads I will not hesitate for a second to let people spend a week sitting and thinking about what they could have done differently.

First, last, only warning.
