Does the Nexus 5 have a special Voice protocol?

A friend of mine has a Nexus 5 also. When we talk over the phone, the call quality is VERY good...like good enough that I thought it was in stereo for a while.

I only get this quality with him. We are both on T-Mobile, but calls to other friends on T-Mobile sound normal. Neither of us is running any special apps. He makes the same comments about it on his end. He's in Florida now and he says it sounds like I am right there even though I am in colorado. This quality thing is consistent...it's not just a random good line. We get this every time he calls me.

Any idea what the deal is? Is this a known hardware thing? Would love to be able to replicate this on other voice calls.

That is HD Voice, to experience it both parties need to have capable handsets. It sounds like the other people you call do not have new enough phones to support it.

I was not aware that the Nexus 5 had HD voice...it isn't in the documentation.

EDIT: Well I'll be damned - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Smartphones_using_HD_Voice

Though it says the galaxy S3 supports HD voice...but I don't hear it on calls with friends with Galaxy S3.

It's been available for a little while now with them.

But yes Jeff it is a huge difference. I notice it when calling my gf or a few of my other friends on T-Mobile.. It's pretty awesome :).

Over a year now(Jan 2013). Unfortunately were still waiting on At&T :( We have all our phones in our family supporting it...Just need a little help from the network.

During CES 2014 At&t is claiming to support it this year...Not sure of the technical reason they are claiming the Asus Padphone X will be the first to support it?

This just in: At&t is finally supporting indoor plumbing... LOL
