Double text weirdness

an issue cropped up today where i am receiving duplicates on incoming text messages. the weird thing though is that while i am receiving both copies of the message simultaneously, one copy is time-stamped for the current time, and the duplicate is time-stamped for exactly 4 hours later. anyone ever have this happen to them and know what causes it/what fixes it.

reboot did nothing, and just for some background, i did not install any apps between yesterday and today, so it should not be an app that is causing it

This sounds more like a server problem than a phone problem. Maybe a glitch at verizon. Could also be localized to a certain area.

this has been happening to me the past week or so too, very annoying, I tried removing handcent and sms popup to see if this would stop the problem and it did not.

Some roms and themes cause double text messages. Its an easy fix.
If you have titanium backup you can go into the files . find one of the duped text message apps , and freeze one of them .
You could also go into Root explorer and change the name of one of the message apps.
What theme or ROM did you guys apply to your phone?

This happened to me when using the Gala X theme a while ago. I had to rename the MMS.apk file to MMS.bak to stop the duplicate messages because there was a messaging.apk, or something else in there as well.

yeah i went the quick and easy route . just froze it.

totally off topic but why do you use sms popup and handcent if handcent has a popup option

I like the larger picture offered by sms popup.

just applied the gala x theme last weekend. that looks like the culprit.

I'm running stock 2.2 with Chomp SMS and have had this problem for about a week. I've been getting tons of texts multiple times with different time stamps that show a time in the future and the past, and sometimes even the present. It's really weird - I'm starting to wonder if I'm being haunted by the ghosts of a Christmas Carol. Just the other day I got a text from my GF four times. I asked her why she sent it so many times and she said she didn't. But this wasn't the only time or the only sender.

Not that I want to pee in your Cheerios or anything, but it's definitely not a ROM or theme or anything like that causing this issue. It's some kind of glitch in Verizon or the X itself or even in Chomp/Handcent, etc.

its a dual sms program working at the same time . you have two texting apps working , so therefore you get double texts. delete chomp sms and see if if fixed your problem. OR
freeze your stock 2.2 message app and see if you still get double texts. chances are you wont.
When you add to , you have to take away . 1=1=2

I have the stock notifications turned off. I'm getting two texts in the Chomp SMS app itself. I have popup notifications turned on and I was getting the same text at, say, 1:15 p.m. There would be two...one stamped as 1:15 p.m. and one stamped at 9:15 a.m. Same message. That was the issue. Not getting two notifications from different texting apps. And it was just over the weekend, it's not all the time. Which is why I think it was something with VZW's service with SMS messages, and not a theme or ROM.
