How do I download direct to sd card on marshmallow

That depends on what you're trying to download and from where. Most browsers, unfortunately, don't give you an option to set the Download path, so anything you download using those will go straight to the internal memory's default Download folder. Some apps, like Netflix or Spotify, have included SD card support, even though their downloads are encrypted and linked to your device/account.
