Downloading from Google Play

I'm just confused here, for example I downloaded the Application "Facebook Messenger" which is 12mb. What is being downloaded? The installer or the FB Messenger application? If it's the installer after installing does the phone automatically deletes the installer?

Most of the time it's the App itself.
Sometimes it's something that could I guess be considered an "installer" (though still part of the App) as it then prompts you to download extra Data but that's only for some very large games.

Thanks! I thought what is being downloaded at the Google Play Store is the .APK file. And i'm wondering what happens after the installation. Thanks for clearing things up!
