Doze - unmonitored apps

I have an app that does an hourly check of my work schedule. Worked fine on Marshmallow, but on Nougat it doesn't always do its check. I have put it in the unmonitored apps list, but still no luck. I think the problem may be that the app doesn't actually do the check, rather the widget for it does, but I see no way to put the widget in unmonitored.
