Hi, this is my first time posting on these forums in a long while! I tried the original Motorola Droid back in 2008, but unfortunately it did not meet my needs, and also not my budget back then, as I was a student and I had an account with AT&T for the iPhone, and did not want to pay an ETF. I've stuck with the iPhone since, and switched to Verizon in February for the superb service. Anyway...to the situation at hand.
My job is giving up on giving us employee phones, but have offered pre-existing employees a check monthly if we bought a phone for work purposes only. The deal was they would pay the minutes and 50% of any data plan required - a very generous offer. So anyway, my significant other and I have a family plan together, both with iPhone 4's. So on Saturday I went into my local Verizon store having finally decided upon purchasing a Droid 3 for my new line. I was immediately informed of the BOGO and how I could add two lines to the plan and I would get a second phone for free. Coming from four years of the iPhone, my significant other and I decided that we could both get the Droid 3 and and switch back and forth between the iPhone and the Droid, depending on what we felt at the time. My work "discount" extends to anybody on the contract, and since it is my significant others contract, the decision was made that we would do the BOGO. The Verizon store did not have any Droid 3's in stock, so they told us we could order online and get the deal. Okay, done. Saturday night we purchased two Droid 3's (for $149!) and also got free activation fees, which is a great added bonus. So today, the phones arrived by FedEx, they were activated, and we LOVE them. SO we decided to switch the Droids to our "personal" phone lines, and I will use my iPhone for work purposes. So we did his line first, we went on verizonwireless.com and tried switching the Droid 3 to his iPhone line - but we received a message that said "This phone is active on another line". Okay, so our phones are active, we need an inactive phone to switch. So we grabbed an old enV out of it's box and activated it on the Droid line so that the Droid was unactivated. However after that the Droid would not activate on his iPhone's line. So we tried reactivating it on the enV line - a no-go, we got a message that there was "a problem activating this device" and to contact customer service.
Now, I have come to the assumption that this has something to do with the Droid being free. I assume that the Droid line needed the data plan on it, and by switching to a "dumb phone", Verizon saw us as inactivating the free line. As I've said, we had every intention of switching the phones back and forth as we please, if I get tired of Android being my personal phone I would want to switch back to the iPhone as my personal one for a bit. Going to the nearest Verizon store every time I have the urge to switch a phone is a pain in the rear, seeing as I could just do this online, however, we can't just switch the devices because they are activated on our lines, so the dumb phone would be the middle man in switching.
I assume, again, that because of the BOGO we can not switch the phone from it's line whenever we want, and this was not explained to us at the store on Saturday. At this point, I would rather pay the contract price for the second Droid 3, so that it can be switched back and forth. But what happens now? My significant other is going to Verizon tomorrow before work to get this situated, but will we have to return and then rebuy the phones? Can he pay the $199 contract price for his and can the BOGO be considered void? Can he return and rebuy the same exact phone? Will my phone be able to be switched back and forth, since my line was the one that paid contract price for the Droid 3 (his line was the "free" one)?
Sorry this was so long, just never dealt with a BOGO deal before, and was really excited I could participate in this one. And also, I have googled this, and before anyone asks if I was trying to get two phones for the price of one and switch to that enV dumb phone to pay a cheaper price and have a phone, please don't. As I said, my work pay a great potion of my bill, so I don't need to do such a thing. And on top of that, at this point I don't WANT the BOGO any longer. I would honestly rather buy the second one and just not be constrained to keeping the phones where they are.
Thanks for any help anyone can give. And while my significant other is planning on going to Verizon tomorrow, he may not make it before Thursday, so I'm hoping for some sort of insight, just to ease my mind!
Thanks again!
