Does anyone else think this phone has the worst camera of any phone they have ever owned? What can be done?

You could download a camera app from the market. Other then being slow to take the picture it has nice looking pictures.

I owned a Droid Eris. That was EASILY the worst camera I have ever used.

Camera Zoom FX is a great camera app, and adds features like using a volume button as a shutter button.

Yeah, the camera is not very impressive. But the phone is reliable and capable, which is what I got it for.

I did download Camera FX Zoom while on sale yesterday, and it has nice options, but I couldn't figure out how to get it to zoom/autofocus where I wanted, lol! So in that respect, stock app seems a little better.

There are much worse cameras. The thing that irks me is it taking a pic while still focusing. I hold the button til it's focused and that fixes it. All in all, the camera is good IMO. it IS a phone though. what did you expect? I've seen other phone cameras that are worse.

I use Lightbox Photos, which has an optional camera app to use if you don't like the stock one. It has standard editing features, great filters and sharing like Instagram (it will even create a photo blog for you of your public photos), and the separate camera app is very quick and clean. The UI and UX are another amazing part of the app, as you can add tabs for your FB and Twitter photos streams for easy social browsing and sharing. Here's the link: https://market.android.com/details?id=com.lightbox.android.photos&hl=en

My biggest issue isn't with the camera itself, but with the user interface. Its a joke compared to the samsung camera UI and is missing a bunch of features that id consider basic. Stuff like a timer, etc.

luckily camera 360 fixes that, but feels clunky, I only use it when I need a self timer.

Beyond the UI, I wish the phone had a physical camera key and sometimes it randomly decides to stop auto focusing.

It depends on what you are taking pictures of. If you have a small child who is doing something funny and you want to get her picture RIGHT NOW, forget it. Same with pets or anything moving.
Now, if you want to get a picture of your lunch for Yelp, assuming nothing on the plate is moving, you can take a very nice picture.
I am a bit tired of the defense that "it IS a phone, after all." That does not ring true with me. It's a phone, a camera, and many other things. The main problem I have with my Droid3 is that it has so much potential, but it was released in various states of development. It's incomplete.
It's as if Ferrari released a car with a lawnmower engine and an 800W surround sound 7.1 stereo enabled to play AM radio only. Then when you told them it didn't do what you bought it for, they quickly released another car and completely forgot to fix any of the issues they did not fix before releasing your car.
If you have a Droid 3, you get the picture. (Actually, if you're taking pictures with a Droid 3, you get the picture 2~5 seconds after what you really wanted to get.)

Oops, in order to contribute, I find Camera 360 to be the software I was hoping would come with the phone. They have great effects, the camera starts up quickly, and it actually takes pictures when you press the shutter button.

For the constantly blinking (every 3 or 4 seconds) camcorder, Vidom works great. It just doesn't take high quality videos.

Personally for a free app i use Camera MX and it works great!! takes much better pictures has lots of features including a self timer feature which i found alot of apps to be lacking oh and its free ;)

Yep the pre-loaded camera is aweful. I tried several different camera apps over the last 3 months and I have found "fast burst camera" to be really good. Truimphs the iphone 4s.
