Droid - How to turn off Verizon Network Connection?

Is there any way to turn off The verizon network connection like on a blackberry. I am trying to test voip, and i believe its just using verizons network still. I want to shut if off and just use wifi to be 100% sure. I know switching the wifi on makes the 3g symbol disappear but it still shows call signal available.

airplane mode is the only one i can think of.

maybe try turning on airplane mode, and then manually turning on wifi?
