Droid Turbo or Galaxy S6?

Hi All,

New to the forums here. I am looking to switch from T-Mobile to Verizon (I have horrible reception with T-Mobile at my home in San Francisco, even with a signal booster). At my local Costco, they are offering $200 Costco Cash for each line that I switch to Verizon. Only catch is that I have to purchase a new phone through them (I'm currently coming from a 2013 Moto X).

Of the options they have, I think I narrowed things down to the Droid Turbo and the Galaxy S6. I'm leaning more towards the Droid Turbo since I really like the Moto experience (with active notifications, Moto Assist, closer to stock Android experience) although I'm not really liking the fact that it's a little heavier and thicker. With the Galaxy S6, I like the form factor but am not but don't like the fact that I'm losing all the Moto things listed above (I'm not sure I would tolerate TouchWiz, but it wouldn't be the same).

They're approximately the same price per month, so just wanted to get everyone's (or anyone's) opinion on which of the two phones they would prefer. I'm aware that they might be coming out with a new Droid Turbo, but it will probably be too big for my taste and after October when the promotion ends.

Thanks in advance.

I'd say Droid Turbo for the battery life and the stock experience or the S6 only if you really want the great camera and can live with a smaller battery and a glass backed phone.

The Galaxy will likely get updates faster and more frequently, based on recent experience, also if that's important to you (probably not if you liked the Moto X.)

But, that's just me, and you're asking in a Droid Turbo forum, so maybe we're biased...

...also there is a Verizon Event Oct 27th, "Sources, along with a handful of other leaks, have suggested for a while now that we should expect two new phones: Droid Maxx 2 & Droid Turbo 2"

So, if your in a position to wait a little longer and/or on fence btwn Samsung & Motorola.....IMHO it may be worth the wait to see what these new models have to offer...

The battery life and the close to stock interface were my big reasons to get the Turbo too. I actually use a Diztronic case on my Turbo to ADD some thickness to the phone as well as add some protection. Not a fan of the trend of super thin phones, I like to feel like I'm actually holding on the something when I'm using the phone. Stuff like that is all subjective though. I've had several Motorola phones over the years going way back to the Star-Tac flip phones and have always had good luck with them...

This. The new models are right around the corner so if it were me I'd wait just a tad longer, especially since the camera may be a lot better for one thing. The Pure Edition Moto X has a much improved camera from its 2014 predecessor, so the same may be true of the Turbo 2.

Found this moments ago....(link below) -but until it actually ships, anything can change ;-)

"Apparently, the Droid Turbo 2 will use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 810 CPU, backed by 3 GB RAM and 32GB internal storage for the base model. A microSD card slot is also said to be featured in the phone, as well as a massive 3700 mAh battery. The display of the device is said to measure 5.4 inches and is expected to sport 2560*1440 QuadHD resolution. The camera on the rear will apparently measure 21 or 23 MP and it will be outfitted with optical image stabilization and laser autofocus."

Hi,
I have used both devices and really like the Turbo for the Moto experience. The S6 was nice, but I missed the Motorola Assist software so I went back to the Turbo. The Turbo is one awesome device, in my opinion.

As far as a newer "Turbo 2" coming out soon, I can't wait to see what it will be like. Also, they should price the Turbo 1 down to reduce any inventory, so you might can snag one at a reduced price. Good luck...

I would go with Droid Turbo over Galaxy S6, I've had to get two Galaxy s6 and both failed me, would reboot randomly and shut off, never once I have ever had a problem with a Motorola device.

Thanks everyone for the replies so far. Not sure if Costco will be having the Droid Turbo 2, and I don't think I want a phone size that big (I think the Droid Turbo would be the biggest I would go; missing the nice form factor of the 2013 Moto X).

Just wanted to also ask, how is the call quality (or which phone's call quality would be better)? I'm more concerned about that than anything.

I have both...long story as to why...but I use the Turbo over the S6.

Yes the camera is great on the S6 but for me that was the only thing. The camera on the Turbo is ok. Some shots aren't as crisp as the S6 but I'm ok with that.

I like the size/weight of the Turbo. I'm the Queen of Dropping Phones, so the Turbo has taken a beating from me & has a few minor marks on the bottom but the glass display is intact (knock on wood). The S6 I was always afraid to drop even thought I did have a case on it.

I hate the battery on the S6. I like knowing that if I am charged up in the morning, I'm really fine until I get home at 7pm and don't need to charge at my desk. The screen is amazing on the S6 but the system I find does lag (but it could be me being impatient...). The quick charge on the S6 is great but I'm a heavy user so it needed to be hooked up a bit and I found that annoying.

As for reception, I find the Turbo is better. I work on the 2nd floor of a 3 story office. My set up is weird-the building is brick, then the interior is open except where my cube is, I'm inside of a brick walled room. The S6 can text and get the internet, but calls have terrible reception-no one can hear me. The turbo has no issue with my location and no complaints from my callers.

Hope I helped!

I've had the Turbo since its launch. Great phone. I have great call quality. Especially if talking with others on Advanced Calling. My wife gets along well with her S6, but I like my Turbo better. I am also interested in the new Turbo 2. Unfortunately, Motorola will be removing some of the Moto Assist features in the new Marshmallow OS. Not happy about that.

I was concerned at first about that, but have since read that what they are removing is redundant functions: Moto Assist and Moto Migrate. These will be offered natively.

So it looks like Moto Actions, Moto Display, & Moto Voice will remain. That might not be much comfort as I suspect the native function may not be as smooth as Moto. I'm a big fan of Moto Display :-)

Turbo battery life, software, radio, physical size and build quality for the win.

The Samsung cameras are universally praised but their Achilles heel is they oversaturate every shot which causes many pictures to have an off tint to them. You would not notice this so much when looking at photos from the S6 by themselves but if you read any side-by-side phone camera reviews it is really spotted. The new Moto X camera has the latest Sony sensor in it and is getting great reviews. It still lacks OIS though. I presume this sensor will be in the Turbo 2. If the OP doesn't want a large phone the Droid Turbo 1 is the obvious choice over the S6.

The cell reception is much better on the Motorola products. I have the Turbo and have seen a marked difference in reception at my house. I get two bars of 4g. On Samsung 6 best was 2 bars of 3g but mostly 1x. Had trouble sending and receiving texts and making phone calls.

This. Wait for droid turbo 2. I love my turbo but I would want the better camera that the new Motorola models have. It's at least only mildly behind G4 and S6 while the Droid turbo is miles behind those... And I say that at the same time believing it's the best phone I've ever owned.

According to his post, the OP must do this by the end of the month, before the Costco promotion ends. I strongly doubt that the Turbo 2 will be available at Costco by the end of October. Also, he doesn't want a phone as big as the Turbo 2 is rumored to be. Honestly, just because of the rumored size, I'd think that the Maxx 2 would be a better choice - but, again, probably not in Costco by the end of the month.

Is there anything online from the fcc that you could use to compare the specs, size of the turbo2 to the turbo because I'm guessing just like the new moto x pure the screen size to phone ratio might actually make the bigger screen in the turbo 2 the same size as the original turbo. I mean the physical dimensions of the phone would be the same size even though the screen is bigger.

I like my Turbo but wait for the new Turbo 2 that is coming out later this month.

Since switching to the Turbo I feel spoiled in terms of battery life and overall speed. Coming from a Galaxy S3, the difference is night and day. Not having to worry about my battery dying in the middle of the day is a liberating feeling (sadly) and the next phone I buy will have to have similar/better battery life for me to even consider it.

My wife has the S6. She charges her phone throughout the day at work but on the weekends her phone regularly clonks out in the late afternoon after an overnight charge.

Yep. This is the first line in the sand that I draw when it comes to phones. Unfortunately, it eliminates about 90% of phones. I just can't deal with battery anxiety.

I agree, this phone has really spoiled me in terms of battery life, actually all around this is a great phone. I have Verizon for my work phone, AT&T for my personal phone, using a Nexus 6 on AT&T, battery life on the Turbo is definitely better.
