Droid X and iPad - Match Made in Heaven

it's what i'm doing right now (tethered to my inc for now) and it's an excellent travel companion. unless you're writing extensive papers on it, the ipad really does do pretty much all i need from a very portable laptop. the great battery life really makes it nice to travel with. coupled with verizon's excellent network coverage, i saw no reason to pay more for the 3G ipad.

for my video watching, web surfing, email answering, and gaming use, it's the best product currently out there. While a chome/android based tablet might do the first 3 things better whenever it comes out, i don't see it beating the ipad in the latter section, there's just more [quality] games in the app store.[/QUOTE]

My 4 year old son and wife is addicted to Angry Birds, and Fruit Ninjas for the ipad comes out tomorrow:D

I'm looking forward to using the Droid X with an iPad as well. I have neither yet, but 8/2 is when I'm elegible for a Droix X (let's pray they have enough to last until 8/2) and I've been saving up for an iPad. I think that combo is pretty cool, especially on long road trips and waiting for the missus while she's shopping. I will say that having the mobile hotspot is going to open lots of doors for people and new apps!

angry birds is a lot of fun, i haven't heard of fruit ninjas, i'll have to check that out.

i can only hope we'll start seeing more quality games in the android market, but having both devices has really dropped the amount of time i game on my phone. i have simple games on it like sudoku and tetris now.

going back and forth from the screen on the ipad to my inc has made it seem too small, can't wait for the droid x, by the time i get it, it should feel like the right size :p

Yea I will do this too...maybe. I actually got a mifi hotspot from verizon so I could use my iPad on verizons network (and for work). I'm wondering if I will be able to cancel my mifi data plan and use the dx wifi instead. That would save me $40 a month!

it would really just depend if you signed a contract when you got the mifi, and how nice your stores csrs/managers are.

I was doing this same thing with my Nexus one, rooted and loaded the tethering app on.
I won't be doing it when I get my Droid X though... only 'cause I sold the iPad. ;)

I liked the iPad a lot, just couldn't justify the cost vs toy aspect.... not that I can justify switching from an N1 to a Droid X, but at least I'll be able to cover that cost by selling the N1.. haha

I probably did have to sign a contract since it has it's own monthly plan and phone number. Depending on what the ETF is it still might be economical to do.

Hi this is exactly my hope: I'm a MiFi user and I bought a Droid X and am ready to pay an early termination fee if I can get the mobile hotspot feature to work.

Unfortunately, my $20/mo droid x mobile hotspot connection craps out after about 10 minutes of use. (Sometimes as little as 1 minute, sometimes as long as 15 or 20 minutes, but never longer.)

Suddenly my hotspot connection dies and droid's notifications pane reports:

"Mobile hotspot Service
3G Data Link Lost"

I've got 4 bars of 3G in an area with very little competing wifi traffic. I'm doing very light Internet over the hotspot (usually just running PING to see how long before it craps out.) Things I have tried:

  • pulling out battery
  • turning off WEP on droid's hotspot network
  • different wifi channels
  • droid plugged into power source, or not

Do I have a bad phone?

Has anyone else been able to get the mobile hotspot feature to stay alive for hours at a time? Really essential to my working environment and I'd hate to have to go back to the expensive MiFi. ($45/mo for 200 MB instead of $20/mo for 2,000 MB)
