So up until now (or very soon from now) the only way that you can play HDMI videos through your Droid X are through your own gallery. Gman over at droidxforums.com is working on a way to get the Droid X to play ANYTHING out of the HDMI port.

Here's his progress as of now and a couple videos he posted of it.
gman said:
Audio out via HDMI: Yes
Video out via HDMI: Yes
Root Required: NO
Android Version: Tested on Stock Droid X 2.1 (not tested yet on Droid X 2.2)
BlockBuster App Video out: ???? (not sure yet, have to put it back on phone)

Droid X Does HDMI - Part One
Droid X Does HDMI - Part Two

Read the rest and keep up with his progress (I know I will and I'll post it here AS SOON as it's ready) over here.

(Obviously, credit, and a BIG THANKS to gman over at droidxforums.com)

Awesome. Being able to take a movie to someones house...on my phone....would be what i would use this for.

Omg this is a dream come true. I pray this works and will happily donate as soon as its up on the market.

Great work to the programmer! Now if only I can get a PS3 controller hooked up via bluetooth for emulators...

Hello 62" HDTV gaming from my couch, all via my Droid X :D

You do realize you can do that now. As long as you got video in your library you can play it out the hdmi...

Also thanks Avlfave for the infomation, this will have me get rid of my speaker phone and start playing my gps video and audio through my trucks video system. That will be nice...

I'll try to get it up as soon as I see him post the application. He did say that it'll probably be in the market too.

Also,

Gman's Application + SNESoid, NESoid, GENsoid, etc =

Fantastic news, I will most certainly donate for this. Fair use lives on after all...

YES! I'm so glad somebody is taking a crack at this; makes me feel less horrible about paying $50 for the overpriced dock.

Really? I thought you could only play content TAKEN WITH THE DROID X through the HDMI port. Are you sure you can load a movie into the gallery?

This would truly be awesome and make the Droid X even cooler. I was expecting that we would be able to do this eventually but not this soon or without rooting! I will be sure to donate or pay if it truly can send out ANYTHING.

I figured they'd find a way around this too, but yeah, it is pretty soon. These hackers and programmers are having a field day with the droid.

From the videos it looked like it was just a display of whatever was currently on the screen so I guess, technically, it will send out ANYTHING.

you can, my brother in law has the X and he has a few movies on his phone he downloaded one if them is Hangover.. And his phone is not rooted

Yes, the only way to take advantage of the HDMI out is through the gallery. This would make it work for everything else.

Yes, i have Grandmas Boy on my phone and it is visible in the gallery and i can play it from the gallery. Even has the HDMI out icon at the top. I did this without re-encoding, just created a folder on SD called Video and it works fine. I did find that some movies wont play...Even with rockplayer. I wish Coreplayer would hurry up, i used it on my Omnia and it played everything.
