you can, my brother in law has the X and he has a few movies on his phone he downloaded one if them is Hangover.. And his phone is not rooted

He probably had to re-encode the video on a PC to work in the Gallary. You don't have to re-encode the videos if you use rockplayer which is what he's using in video2.

Yes, i have Grandmas Boy on my phone and it is visible in the gallery and i can play it from the gallery. Even has the HDMI out icon at the top. I did this without re-encoding, just created a folder on SD called Video and it works fine. I did find that some movies wont play...Even with rockplayer. I wish Coreplayer would hurry up, i used it on my Omnia and it played everything.

But you can't play a video in rockplayer through HDMI out (until this app is released). So even if rockplayer or Coreplayer plays it, it has to be playable by the stock app (i.e. the Gallery video player) in order to use HDMI out, right?

I ripped the Hurt Locke to avi copied it to my media/video folder and it played with rockplayer and video player over hdmi no problem

Most formats will play in the stock player, but if you run into a format that won't you'll either need to re-encode or use a third-party player which doesn't support HDMI. This application will allow third party players to use the HDMI interface if it works well.

My primary concern is whether it will play at screen resolution or enable something higher. My guess is screen resolution so the quality may not be great, but still better than what we've got now.

I actually didnt notice this today since i dont have the HDMI cable yet but in settings under HDMI you can choose the output format. Having never saw this before i was surprised to see mine was set at 480p at 60hz. Changed it to 720p and 60hz since my tv is 1080p at 60hz. Im sure most of you have seen this option before but i just thought i would add this since i didnt see it until today.
