I have 2.2 on my "X" and it does not go into landscape mode

I really doubt it. You can use LauncherPro or ADW.Launcher for that. I know for a fact that LauncherPro does it but I can't remember for sure if ADW does but I think so.

Yes ADW will go into landscape...

im using LP and have the Landscape Locked so it don't rotate in the Home Screen. imo its messed up looking-
