It's all well and good having dual core phones, but when will android support the hardware (i.e. be written to take advantage of dual core processors)? I assume that'l be an update down the track.

Any thoughts?

Maybe honeycomb. My reason is because the motorola xoom was made in a partnership between motorola and google. They made it together and it has dual-core so I would think honeycomb would support it. You never know this may just be tablet. (i mean the dual-core support not honeycomb we already know it is for both phones and tablets.)

It helps if your OS multitasks and multithreads a lot. Seems to describe Android better than other competiting platforms.

Gingerbread with its ext4 file system would do even better than previous Androids, which uses the YAFFS file system. ext4 uses multiple threads while YAFFS is single threaded. The file I/O is extremely important for Android performance, not just launching apps, but also because the UI and the browser also caches.

Since dual core phones seems to be the next generation... I believe we'll see the transition early in the near future. (keeping my fingers cross)

It shouldn't need to adapt anything just to run the processor and be faster than 1ghz single units but optimizing may improve the performance more.
Putting current 2.2 on a faster processor processor should run faster than a slower speed processor irregardless of any optimization..
