When I launch people and select a contact there are 2 or more options to select for the same person. After further investigating, not every contact has duplicates. Does anyone know why I would have duplicates when editing a contact? This is of course a minor issue. Just wanting to know if anyone knows how to fix this. Thanks in advance for your help.

Yes. When you save a new contact you save it as either a google contact or a phone contact. I never use phone contact's. I only use google contacts. You can change it at the very top. Go right now and click new contact and you'll see at the very top where it ask if you want to save it as google contact or phone contact.

Okay, now click messages, click menu, click view and it will have it checked what all you're viewing. I only have google contacts shown because that's all I use. Because if you save contacts as phone contacts they don't sync with the gmail automatically.

Now there are other reasons you could have duplicates too. But first figure out if you have a mix of phone and google contacts because that's most likely the reason. If you've got them all saved as google then go to gmail.com on your computer. Log in to your email. Click contacts. It will show you how many contacts you have.

In the contacts settings somewhere up top in your gmail account click "check for duplicates." Once you do that it will find all duplicates and put them together as one.

If you do have a reason to save your contacts as phone contacts instead of gmail contacts, which I can't think of a good reason, then if you have them saved in google too you will have duplicates. Theres really no reason I can think of to ever save a person as a phone contact. Because the google contact sync's with gmail automatically so therefore if you lose your phone or when you get your next droid you will have all your contacts automatically. And it shows up in your "people" on your phone just the same way phone contacts do.

When you click messages and then menu and then view I would uncheck show auto google contacts.

If you use Touchdown, it has the ability to copy and then maintain contacts in sync with itself and the phone contacts as it stores it's contacts in it's own internal database from the Exchange server.

If you don't do that, the phone has no idea who your contacts are even though Touchdown has a full set.

Using that feature, you would not want to sync your google contacts to avoid getting duplicates. So it would be the opposite.

thanks

Thanks for all the info. I am going to dig into that tonight and figure out exactly what's going on. I really appreciate your response.

That part is when your logged onto your gmail account from your computer and you clicked on my contacts on the left of web page, the top of the page will have 4 tabs from left to right the last tab will show more actions.

Thats where you will see the find & merge tab button at

I don't understand what you're saying or the point. Why would I ever want to save a contact as a phone contact instead of a google contact? They look exactly the same in the address book on the phone. They both are capable of the same things. Except one sync's automatically and can be accessed on the computer and different locations other than the phone and the other doesn't without having other software or manually doing it. Other than that it seems exactly the same.

Yes, that's what I said in the post was to log in on the computer but I didn't point out the specific location because I didn't go look so thanks for letting him no the specific location.

If you don't have access to a computer you can sign on and do this on your phone too but it's just easier to do it on the computer if you have one sitting there. Not sure how to do it in Gmai's mobile website or if you even can but you can go to the desktop version on the phone too.

Okay. Your post helped me out a lot. I figured out what is going on with my phone. Basically, when I go to edit a contact, there would be two or more cards to choose from. Both cards would have the same contact info in it, but it wasn't a google contact.

What I did was click on "Linked." Unlink the second card and when I go back out to the contact list I would see the duplicate card. Click on it and delete it.

But now I am aware of the Google contacts and see the option to show or hide. Thanks for your help again.

No problem. I figured this is what it was. A lot of people run into this problem and wonder why their contacts aren't in their gmail. There are a lot of people that didn't even know it had this feature. Of course most of us on this forum do but most people who are walking around with the phones don't.

Just always remember when creating a new contact it's the first tab.

I am using outlook and syncing it with my phone, I dont use my google account, I tried to turn off the google contacts sync in settings, but it seems the dups are still there

I use only phone contacts. it stores all the same info on your phone to your verizon online account, with a convenient sync button. Or via backup assistant.

Yes, but isn't that more trouble than just saving them as google contacts? Because if you save them as google contacts it backs them up online to your google account and there is no convenient sync button. There is no button at all! Right when you create or edit a contact it backs it up online instantly. That second. You don't have to push a button to do it or remember to do anything. Doesn't that seem kinda better?

And if you get another android device in the future right when you log in all your contacts will be there. You won't have to go through any sort of set up or sync anything.

As soon as you edit a phone contact, backup assistant can sync it as well. Its really not that much harder. Yes gmail is easier, by maybe 15sec ..... nothing to sweat over. They both work well ;)

Right, I'm not saying Back Up assistant is difficult by any means. I'm just saying why would I choose that over google? I wouldn't even think of it to be as reliable although I'm sure it is reliable. But I don't see the contacts in my email ever going anywhere for sure or having any sort of problems.

The thing is a lot of people new to the phone or that don't research how to use it like we do, most average people with an android, have no idea about this even. They would probably choose to save it as a phone contact even without backup assistant just because that is what they're used to.

It's amazing how many people have smart phones and literally have no idea it can do even a fraction of what it does.

I'm just saying why would I choose that over google?

One reason would be the desire NOT to have contacts saved to google. Using Touchdown (Exchange) for contacts, I don't want those 400+ contacts synced to Google as they are business contacts. I manage those contact via Touchdown or Outlook at work, not via google.

Since touchdown stores the contacts in its own database, to make the contacts visible to the phone apps (messaging, inbound calls etc), you need to have touchdown sync to the phone contacts.

Replacing the phone or doing a complete data wipe is simple, you just resync with Touchdown and it will resync to the phone. This includes calendar and email as well.

The only contacts that I want google to have are my own personal ones.

That's exactly right for the majority of people. I exported all my VZW contacts and imported them into Google. I'll give it a try before I knock it ;)

I like to keep my contacts synced to VZW Backup Assistant because I may not always want to use a smartphone. If I replace the DInc with a regular phone I will easily be able to restore my contacts. I do not really use Google for much except searches online.

OK, so different question - since I've owned the phoen, I have been saving new contacts to 'phone' never realizing I was then unable to do automatic gmail syncs. So how do I now take these 30 or 35 saved 'phone' contacts and sync them with Gmail? Export then import? Any easier way/util/trick?

Thanks...and never saving to 'phone' again....

There are a lot of instances that duplication takes place, it's either after or during syncing. I have experienced the same thing before, I used Scrubly Duplicate Contacts Remover and this tool works well for me. The process goes like this, this tool scans and deletes those duplicates automatically. Just give it a try..hope this helps resolve the problem of yours. Thanks.

Convert the Phone Contacts to Google Contacts?

Any answer to this one anywhere? I'm in the same boat showing two groups. Would love to switch to Google Contacts only, but how do I convert all the ones that are in the Phone Contacts group only?
