Is Titanium Backup the main way guys are carrying over apps and settings from rom to rom? This is safe as long as it is not a major upgrade like from eclair to froyo?

What does nandroid do? I tried it once, and it didn't restore as will as titanium did. I thought nandroid was like a snap shot saved of your whole system? When I last tried it, I had to redo a lot of settings and wallpapers.

Thanks for any help and insight you can share!

Nandroid makes an exact snap shot. If you restore a nandroid, you basicaly go back to how your phone was when you made the backup.

If you make a nandroid, then flash a new rom, then restore that nandoid, you back where you started.

Does a nandroid backup work with different roms or do you have to restore a nandroid backup with the specific rom you were using at the time the nandroid backup was created? For instance, if I were to make a nandroid backup while using my stock 2.1 rom and then move to a custom rom... could I flash the custom rom and restore the stock 2.1 nandroid backup without any issues?

Correct. And this is the same with 2.2 roms, you can freely switch back and fourth

Ohh... that makes things much easier.

However, what about upgrading ROMs?
So if I have the BakedSnack ROM 0.95... I wanted to upgrade to BakedSnack ROM 0.96.
I would just make a Nandroid of .95... and then download and flash the .96 ROM?

Usually updates of the same ROM don't require you to wipe before upgrading. So you don't have to backup or anything, just flash it over the top of what your running

Very nice. So I assume the Rom maker will specify when a wipe is needed. Thanks

Just to make sure this is clear, if you did this you couldn't restore your data from the nandroid backup to use with the updated rom. The nandroid restore puts everything, including the underlying ROM, back as it was at the backup, so you would be back to 0.95.

Something like titanium backup will allow you to restore applications, and in many cases even the data for the app.

I think the option listed later in the thread to upgrade a rom without wiping the phone is what you want, but it isn't always possible, depends on the rom.

Edit: Now that I think about it, there is probably also a way to only restore certain portions of a nandroid backup, but just know that if you do a full, normal nandroid restore, you will lose any updates since you took the backup (like updating the rom)
