I had the same question that I am sure a lot of people who lack android 2.2 do. Which is really better, Easytether or Pdanet? Well I decided to do a little study to answer that question this afternoon.

I used two different phones, the MyTouch 3g and the Motorola Cliq XT, both running android 1.6 and this is what I came up with.

MyTouch 3g

All tests were performed on Sunday July 18 2010

Tests 1,2, and 3 were done through speedtest.net

The remainder were done through mobilespeedtest.com

I did not publish the 500kb tests through mobilespeedtest.com because I felt the results varied too widely from
test to test.

All these tests were done on a motorola cliq xt using android 1.6

All tests were performed in the same location and in the same hour of the day.

Tests were done over T-Mobile's 3g network.

I don't know about you guys but I would say spending the 10 bucks on Easytether beats the hell out of Pdanet's 20.

Bandwidth wise? Absolutely. What other things do we have to look at though? Does Easytether support Bluetooth DUN? Does it have as much OS support as PDANet? Those are the only 2 things I can think of that would have to go into the factor as to which is better and why.

For the purposes of a Windows OS and highest possible bandwidth, I agree with going with Easytether absolutely no questions asked.

Wow. Never tried anything other than PDAnet since it was the gold standard in Palm land where I came from. EASY to set up and stayed connected....When I need to set this up, guess I owe Easytether a look.

another question i have about easytether: does it report data usage as just data usage, or as data used for tethering? what i mean is i know pdanet doesnt make it known (to my carrier) that i am using the data for the purpose of tethering; it just reports as regular 3g usage. i would want to make sure easytether does the same before i use it

+1 - anyone have the answer?

I doubt easytether reports anything. Sprint's counting your data transfers on their end, as it passes throught their servers, not by reading your phone.

When I switched to Android from BlackBerry, the PdaNET folks gave me a new license for only a few dollars. I don't mind paying a little extra for great support.
