Echo on Phone Calls

Curious is anyone else can replicate this issue I am having with the smaller Pixel 2. When I receive a phone call, the person on the other end of the line hears a really bad echo . It seems to only happen on incoming calls. I hear nothing unusual on my end. If I hang up and call the person back, the echo goes away. I'm on Project Fi. I have weak cell signal so I stay connected to WiFi at home mostly. I'm not using hangouts or anything, just the regular dialer.

To produce the problem:
  • Receive incoming call and the person on the other end hears an echo.
  • Hang up and then call the person back. Echo goes away.
Seems software related since calling the person back makes the echo go away. Thinking about factory reset unless others can verify it happens to them. I am on the most recent November security patch.

re:

I am on Fi also and - now that you mention it - my son complained of an echo when he called me last evening from his iPhone 7 while I was at home.

One thing worth trying (which I am going to do right now) is to open the Phone app, tap the three dot menu at top right, tap Settings and then Calls and disable Wi-Fi calling.

If that resolves the echo, leave it disabled and complain to Fi. If no change, then re-enable it and move on to other ideas.

Thanks for the tip. I went into the Phone app settings to turn it off and it was already off :(

Usually when I am at home the cell signal is bad enough that I turn on airplane mode and re-enable WiFi to force the calls to come in over WiFi. Ill see what happens if I turn off wifi and take calls only over Fi Service when I am in an area that has strong signal.

If you are on At&t , I think it their issue. I and others I talk to have had this with different BT headsets. It is gone away with my P2 XL tho.

So update:

Found a few other people reporting the issue on Project Fi's Help Forum:

Feel a little better knowing it's not just me and hopefully a software bug of some kind. I also found someone on Reddit that claimed their Pixel 2 XL had echo issues and it was resolved by switching to a traditional sim card instead of using esim. I was not able to fix my echo issues on my smaller Pixel 2 by going back to sim card.

I am not using a Bluetooth device of any kind, and I am not even on speaker phone. Calls are coming in via WiFi, so I don't think it's related to a specific carrier. Hoping it's just a bug software or Project Fi app.
