Hi,

I'm eligible for a new phone on my AT&T contract. If the Nexus 5 is not offered on AT&T, wondering if it would be possible for me to buy an iphone 5s from AT&T, then sell it and buy the Nexus 5. Would there be any issues with AT&T?

I have a Galaxy S2 Skyrocket at present.

Thanks.

AT&T does not care if you buy a subsidized phone and never use it. As long as you sign that 2 year contract extension you can do what you want.

This would work no problem. The only downside is you wouldn't get to move from carrier to carrier with your N5 if you wanted.

What about buying a N5, going to ATT prepay and selling the phone you have?

Nope there wont be an issue.. but why not buy Moto X... its close to Nexus devices, if you dont like it sell it

Thanks for your replies and helpful suggestions.

Re: AT&T prepaid. Can't do it because we have multiple phones and seemingly the shared set up we have now works best.
Re: Moto X. I would have picked this up except I wasn't impressed with the camera (both with my personal limited testing and what I've seen & read on the net). If the Nexus 5 camera isn't much of an upgrade, the Moto X might be the way to go.

Thanks again.

Yes you can do that with no problems and would probably make a little extra money on top of it all.

Good luck in whatever you buy and try to sell. The Moto X has dropped in resale value quite a bit. If you want something that will get you top dollar, try to find a gold 5S. You could also consider the Note 3 for resale.

Why do you need to get a new, subsidized phone from AT&T just because you're eligible? Can't you just get an N5 from Google and put your AT&T sim in it?

Cause the at&t phone will be heavily discounted, and you won't get any reduction on your monthly bill for BYO.

The OP said he's on a shared plan. If/when the current contract ends for his existing phone, wouldn't he just continue off-contract at the same monthly cost for his line on the shared plan?

Maybe I'm missing something.

Yes everything would continue with the ops account as normal. He asked that if AT&T didn't get the nexus would he be able to get a different phone on contract then sell it and buy a nexus.

If you're going to continue being on postpaid with AT&T there is no reason not to extend the contract. Buying the 5s on one of their $99 specials and turning it for $650-$750, buying a $350-$450 Nexus = $100 to $300 in extra money in your pocket. No way that's a bad idea unless you have issues turning the iPhone. On the high end, that's getting close to covering any termination fees should you decide to end early so win-win-win for everyone.
