email notification pops up, no email?

I have an email acct on S3 that every now and then shows a notification on the top bar but when I go into the app there is no new email??

this just started happening on an email acct and app ive had from day 1. any ideas how to rectify this from happening?

do I have to uninstall the email app? can I do that to the stock app?

Provide us a little information. Which email app, gmail or regular mail? What kind of email account? Any chance an email is coming into a folder other than the inbox, and triggering the alert?

When you receive a notification, do you go into email from the notification bar or the app icon on your home screen or drawer?

it is the regular stock app using a verizon outlook express acct (POP). it actually hasnt happened for a full day now?? not sure why other than the fact I cleaned up all my folders and removed what I didnt need on my phone any longer. Not sure if that is what did it or not??

I always view my emails by entering the app icon on home screen.
