Email sync issue - hotmail

OK, I have a Samsung galaxy s4 with jelly bean and a galaxy note pro 12.2 with kitkat. On the s4 the built-in email app allows me to sync hotmail folders for ALL emails no matter how old they are. On the note pro I can only sync a month's worth of emails no matter what I set the folders to sync. These folders are the extra ones you create not the system ones like inbox etc. Any one has any ideas why this is the case and if kitkat has introduced this behaviour with email syncing. I'll also point out that when you go to set the sync time for these folders a message appears at the bottom stating "Period to sync emails restricted by server to : All. I mean what's this message actually mean as the emails aren't syncing to All anyway. It's always a month.
