Fi on phones uses encryption to secure your data while using open hot spots. Does this feature work with the new data only SIM's? How would I get this to work on my iPad?

I did not see a Fi app for the iPad in the app store. I am not sure if it wold really tell me anything since I don't have Fi service yet. Having a secure iPad at hotspots would go a long way in getting me to switch to Fi.

I am waiting for my data SIM. Planning to use it on android phone so I was interested to see if the wifi assistant would work on that as well so I can use it as a hotspot.

I am not sure phone wifi can work as a hotspot and connect to a different hotspot at the same time. If it can that is a really cool use case.

Why can't you do that same thing on the pone with a voice account?

You can't connect a device to a wi-fi hotspot and have it serve as a hotspot at the same time. You could tether a computer to it using USB tethering (using something like EasyTether, for example) and use the wi-fi connection on there though.

Regarding the OP's question about encryption, I believe the Fi App is what actually does this and it appears to work in some sort of privileged mode on the phone to do this. I don't know if you can simply install it on an Android phone or tablet to get it to work... that's a good question though. Of course it won't work on any non-Android device.

well, I got the data SIM and put it in a sony xperia. Previously, I installed google connectivity services. The phone recognized the SIM as activated. It gave it a new phone #.

When I installed the FI app and ran it, it said "activating" for a few secs and then a message saying that only account management was available on the device. I do not see wifi assistant anywhere so that seems to work only with nexus devices on FI.

I tried calling to/from the phone with the new # and I cannot- it doesn't receive or make calls. I can probably use hangouts to do that. So it works as advertised and doesn't really add anything useful except maybe make an old phone become partially useful.

I guess I will have to wait until I am really curious about Marshmallow or N before I try out Fi :(
