Errors in Recovery mode with HTC Inspire 4G

Hi. Noobie here. Have a HTC Inspire from ATT. Had it for 2+ years. No problems UNTIL ATT pushed it's latest software update. Now phone is stuck in infinite boot loop. White HTC Screen then Rethink Possible, etc. etc. keeps recycling, then goes black.
Did some research and found a zillion ways to try and recover and flash ROM, wipe cache, etc. Tried factory reset with no luck. Downloaded clockwork and update cm 7.0.0 DesireHD signed zip files and copied to SDcard.
When I boot phone with vol - power mode and do recovery choice I get red triangle, then I do Vol + Power. Then I get Android system recovery <3e>. With these errors:

E: Can't read /misc
(I/O error)
E: Can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E: set_bootloader_message-block: emmc_read-data fail !
E: Can't mount /data/data/recovery/log
E: Can't open /data/data/recovery/log
E: set_bootloader_message-block: emmc_read-data fail !

Then when I choose "Apply update from sdcard" I get

Invalid operation and more errors which I can't read fast enough before screen goes black.

Soooo I think it means that phone can't "see" SDCard OR those particular files are missing OR I'm doing something wrong (wouldn't be the first time )

I really want to see if I can recover this bricked phone even though I know my data is toast at this point.
Anyone have any ideas or input would be greatly appreciated.

I just want to thank you for reminding me how to factory reset my brother's phone.
