Even with an extended battery...

... and running 3G, e-mail push notifications delayed 10 minutes, very moderate use, closing apps when not using them, not taking advantage of the auto-app updates with the store, I still only get about 5-6 hours of moderate use at most. I literally sent about 25-35 texts today, and made 2 phone calls with a total of about 15 minutes. The phone stayed on my work desk most of the day and I received about 20 emails over that time span at work.

How can this phone drain it's resources so fast by sitting on a desk 75% of the day? I have the Samsung 2100 mAh battery in there now.

Have any of you found a good way to conserve the battery with this phone?

Turn the phone off. :-!

There's pretty much nothing that can be done, so I've stopped worrying. Though you can bet battery life will be the biggest factor when choosing a new device.

Even with my Hyperion 3800mah battery I'm not happy. However I just replaced it with a new one and battery life is a bit better. How old is your battery? Over time they will slowly lose their ability to hold a charge. I usually replace my battery every 6 to 9 months. I am looking to replace my Nexus soon an am looking at the S4 and One. I am leaning towards the S4 mainly because it has a removable battery.

My battery is only 2 weeks old. What a bummer.

You may be having some sort of app that's constantly running or a glitch like the exchange one that prevents your phone from sleeping properly. Download betterbatterystats and run it for a full charge and see if anything is keeping it up.

Run it for a full charge means... to keep the app running throughout the day?

unlock, root and flash a battery saving kernel/ROM. That is what this phone was built for.

Turn off Google Now, that helps. Do a factory reset, that helps, too.

download the app, charge the phone to 100 %, open the app up, close it, then use the phone regularly. at the end of your charge (or even half way through) check the partial Wake locks. see what is keeping the phone awake the longest. if it is some app you didn't use much all day, you know it is that one. i had an equalizer app installed when i got 4.1, and it CHEWED through my battery in about 4 hours.....Better batter stats pinpointed the app for me...instantly doubled my batter life because the app was causing my phone to run pretty consistently at 700mhz.

if better battery stats doesn't look weird to you at all, then it is something else.
possible bad battery, but probably not.
things that eat battery are:
bad signal (turn LTE OFF if you aren't using it in the settings>more>mobile networks>network mode)
turn off Wifi, Bluetooth,GPS if not using and screen brightness should be as low as you can go with still being able to see the screen easily
might be a good idea to disable maps if you dont use it much. i noticed that was a battery eater as well.
turn off google now unless you need it, and turn off your location settings.

on the stock 1850 battery, in poor LTE/3G (bounces between the two at work) i can get through an 8 hour day with similar usage to yours.
