We are just nine days away from the release and I am not sure exactly how to root the EVO 4G phone for a USB, wi-fi and bluetooth internet connection over 3G. I would like to know how to use all three to see which one is fastest and most stable. I am currently using MyTether on my Pre and need the capabilities to use the EVO as a modem to get to the internet day one. I am sure as soon as Froyo is released there will be a root for the 4G. Thank you in advance for your help.

Right, the phone has been rooted but nothing has been released yet. There are third party apps that support USB and BT tethering without rooting like PDAnet and EasyTether. But neither support Wifi, and neither mention 4G. So we'll have to wait and see what happens after the release.

I'd be willing to bet that PdaNet (the tethering app that doesn't require root) will work out of the box unless HTC has done something special to block it. The 4G thing shouldn't matter too much, either.

PDAnet should work out the box without root. It supports BT PAN (windows only) and USB (Win/Mac/linux?).
There is no guarantee with WiFi tether app (not in market, needs to be downloaded and installed via sdcard... but its free!!!) will work, but one thing it definitely needs, its root. Until someone who has rooted (original or once an exploit has been released publicly) tests out the various versions of the wifi app, we won't know.

from what I've seen, the default rom already have option to use usb as tethering connection. not sure about bluetooth though.

So wait... can you tether for free without paying the 20$ a month if you don't use the mobile hotspot app?

I found this in another stream, "
HTC has a tethering app they put in their Windows Mobile phones that also has WiFi tethering (hotspot). Sprint, of course, strips this out of their ROMs. But you can find it on sites like XDA for the WinMo phones.

I've been using it for a while and it works great. " 3G & WiMAX Tethering Speed Test Results - Android Forums

The speed tests show that PDANet and EasyTeather are slower than the installed software. Does anyone know how to get this software from these sites and put on the EVO?

ANyone know if the USB tethering can be used with a Mobile Router (like a cradlepoint)?

According to the thread you're quoting, the USB tethering capability apparently is built into the EVO by HTC, and will work out of the box. No need for you to do anything other than plug a USB cable in.

The HTC WinMo WiFi stuff you're talking about will not work on the EVO... It's for WinMo.

You will likely have to wait a couple weeks (or maybe days... who knows?) before someone puts together a custom ROM that includes an unlocked HotSpot app before you can do WiFi tethering, or root the phone and get one of the apps that allows it.

I guess what I'm trying to say is that you do have several "day one" options for non-WiFi tethering, but WiFi will come (though that will still likely require some rooting).
