EVO or Epic?

I know, I may be crazy but I'm thinking about swapping my EVO for an Epic 4G now. It'd be an even swap, so I wouldn't have to pay or anything. I know other Galaxy phones are going to come out, and maybe even soon, but I'd imagine they would cost more with no contract and my upgrade isn't due until August anyway.

I take a lot of photos and videos on my phone and I've come to realize that the EVO just doesn't do a great job of videos, it's Ok when it comes to photos.

So I have a few questions. Is the leaked froyo update good enough to run as a ROM with EVERYTHING working? Being on EVO 2.2 since August, pretty much can't go back to 2.1. Do you think Samsung will release 2.2 officially soon? And how is the camera for stills and videos?

After Flashing Froyo on my Epic I feel like I have a new phone.

I do Not even have the need to look for an upgrade at this point.

Waiting for Froyo on the Epic is like a chasing of the wind.

First off, BWAHAHAHAHA....

I can attest to the stability of the leaked 2.2 ROM, although I eventually wanted to try the custom ROM route. Everything fully functions. Videos on the Epic look great! But I haven't tried video recording with the Evo to know which is better honestly.

Photos are ok. I mean, if you take lots of outdoor pics, then you won't be the slightest disappointed. Indoor shots look well too, with plenty of light. If you're in darker areas, the images start to appear grainy. And in some instances, using the flash introduces more noise into the photos. That's what I have experienced. I have yet to have a phone replace a dedicated camera though anyway. It's always nice to have the extra feature for when you want to capture an image or video of something that you see while out and about though!

Thanks. Something I've noticed is that the audio recording during video recording is terrible with the EVO. Pictures are just ok. Looks like it's worth it to take the plunge to the Epic. It should last me until the next great Sprint phone.

2.2 works awesome on my epic. it definately seems to run faster and i also get better battery life than before. make sure you get a good gps lock before running the update and then get a lock immediately afterwards. that seems to prevent the gps problems some people are having.

Yeah, well coming from a Palm Pre and debating on whether I wanted to get the Epic, she told me it's better to get it and try it for 30 days than constantly thinking about it, then never getting it, and always wondering. I'd say give it a shot. I'd definitely play with one in the store first, if you haven't already.

Is the EPIC 4G with a custom froyo great? Sure, but not better than custom 2.1 ROM like Syndicate. If you want business grade stability 2.1 custom ROMS are better suited than any 2.2 froyo release currently out.
A provider here in the USA publicly stated their galaxy S line will go to 2.2 in March. So, by April we should have an official Epic 4G froyo, and by the end of May very stable custom ROMs.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and say we'll have an official Froyo update for the Epic much sooner than April.

I think Epic 4G is a great phone. Don't hesitate to make the trade. Froyo or not, it's still faster than the Evo. On 2.1 ROMS you can get 1200-1300 on Quadrant scores, which I know is not saying that much. But it's a great phone. Display is gorgeous, and yes the pics and video look beautiful.

The 2.2 custom ROMS are great too. Honestly, aside from slight increase in speed and better battery, I don't feel like it's that much of an upgrade from my custom ROM 2.1. I mean, aesthetically I like the gingerbread keyboard now, but again, not that big of a difference.

So again, jump on in, join the club, enjoy your phone. Maybe you'll feel less hand cramping from holding a 4" screen vs. 4.3" screen phone. =)

Sure hope so.

And agreed on the premise that the camera on the Evo is REALLY lacking behind the Epic one. I had the EVO along with my wife. I lost my EVO and thus am trying out the Epic. Now, I'm not big on taking picture and such but it's so darn evident. My wife can't say enough about the difference. She really wishes her EVO took pictures like the Epic.

Wrong! I've been running a Froyo custom ROM for over a month and it is completely stable and trouble free. (Quantum). Why would you want to run a 2.1 rom when the 2.2 roms are just as stable? If anyone is having problems with the 2.2 roms it's because of not properly following the flashing instructions.

Ever heard of the phrase, "read between the lines?" Nearly all, of not all, Samsung smartphones lack froyo. Now coupe that with these two fact:
1) Samsung and carriers work closely together to release, which means Samsung's resources are spread across various carriers at any given time
2) All Samsung phones that will be getting Froyo are experiencing this delay as well, like the EPIC, this means that intended resources to allocate to a phone is currently working with a divisible. So, the original X amount of Samsung staff working with Sprint is now X/Y. This applies to all carriers
3) Samsung has publicly said their is a delay related to an important feature, but has not posted a release timeline. In business jargon, it's probably more than 30 days away, but not sure how far away.
4) Samsung also has to work on Froyo for new phones, because phones experience the most sales the 1st quarter that they are released. (Assuming manufacturing is not a limitation)

It's not just the delay of an issue in the EPIC 4G that needs to be addressed, but the compounding affect of all the Samsung phones that were scheduled to get Froyo last year as well as the new Samsung Froyo equipped phones. And at this point, no provider will accept a new Samsung phone without Froyo. Imaging Selling an HTC LTE Froyo phone and a Samsung LTE Eclair phone on Verizon. Why would Verizon bother? Think about it, you're a rep and you look at the phone cheat sheets. One has 2.2 and the other has 2.1. Let's not think like the nerds that we are, but like the reps at stores. Remember: New phones get priority for updates. Look at the Samsung Tab. It's running 2.2

**I'm only referring the USA market**

I switched from an Evo running CM6 to an Epic which I rooted currently running the 2.2 version of midNIGHT ROM and I don't regret it at all. I love the Evo and have no complaints with it so far.

True Feelings On the Epic

Hey fellow android users...I want to know your true feelings about ur epic 4g..I was just offered a trade for my Htc Evo, I don't know if i should trade or not..thanks in advance...

Here are mine (I've had it for just about a month now). I'm running the stock Android 2.1, no rooting or other mods:

1. Beautiful screen that's great for everyday use, multimedia, and decent in direct sunlight (I'm in SoCal, so this is huge for me)

2. Good performance, very little lag, great gaming experience

3. Decent keyboard, a little wide for my tastes (coming from a Sprint Pre), but I'm getting used to it and can now type pretty quickly and accurately

4. Swype rocks for portrait use

5. GPS is frustrating because it won't report better than 30m accuracy, which works fine for car navigation but not so much for, e.g., tracking a run

6. The lack of save-to-SD card for apps limits things, but I've been able to manage

7. Overall look/feel is nice enough, not cheap at all but not quite as solid as the Evo

8. Right now my biggest frustration overall is that when I'm hooked into my car's Aux for audio, and I get a call, the phone doesn't switch to Bluetooth for the call audio unless I unplug the Aux connection. That seems to be specific to the Epic and so far I haven't found a good fix.

I'd say that the Epic is a good phone overall, and I'm enjoying using it. With Froyo, I think it would be a great phone. But without any firm idea of when we'll get it (although I'm sure we will), that should weigh into a decision to go with the Epic.

Thanks a ton for ur honest view..I didn't know Epic users still didn't have froyo..Yea i mean i love my Evo its just i like that keyboard the Epic has and being able to watch movies on it soon ..As well as that display..and the phones glass face is gorilla glass or something correct??

Yes, it's Gorilla Glass, and so (theoretically) can be used without a screen protector, which is also a huge plus for me.
