Hoping this is the right place to post this...if not please move.

Due for an upgrade from Sprint Friday Oct 1, and honestly need to get away from blackberry for a while. Looking into a 4G phone(living in NY so will have 4G by EOY). So, a few concerns to help determine if I should upgrade now or wait for something new in Q4:
  1. Will the Evo get the new Sense UI and be compatible with htcsense.com? This is a big factor in my decision.
  2. I know it's only speculation at this point, but is there any comfot in saying HTC will even release a new 4G phone by Q4? I don't know if I can stay with my bberry until 2011.
  3. What's thr story with Swype on the Evo? I've done a few searches and it seems to still be in locked beta. I tried Swype on the Epic in store, and loved it.
  4. Please don't tell me to get an Epic. I don't want to turn this post into an Epic vs Evo thread. HTC is my brand of choice, so let's keep it at that.

Any help is appreciated.

1. We don't know yet, my gut feeling is that the Evo, N1, etc. are all at the base level of the next generation of android phones so I'd want to say yes, but as with any type of software development they may want to put features in there near it's final release that the Evo may not have enough room for, etc. It's just impossible to tell unless HTC has already said yes or no and I missed it.

2. HTC is coming out with a ton of phones lately, there seems to be some screen shortages but as you said it's all speculation at this point. I'm not aware of any future inventory sheets or product roadmaps of a HTC 4G sprint device.

3. Swype is in a closed beta, it's a great keyboard but have you checked out SwiftKey? I was pro-Swype and was lucky enough to get in to the beta while it was open, however I'm on SwiftKey now and find it less frustrating and faster. Though there are ways to get Swype on to your Evo if you're not in the beta.

From what I have read so far there may be an issue on file size so maybe no official version but the Guys at XDA are working on porting it over for rooted users. But still no official word one way or the other. (Unless I have missed something in the last few days)

Since Sprint is the only player (Right now) with 4g phones probably not but it looks as though Verizon may be hitting the scene pretty big with LTE and 4g phones next year. Look for 4g WIFI hotspots to roll out first then phones following soon after.

We are all wondering about that one. They just closed the first Beta, made some upgrades and started a new Beta roll out so it should be coming soon, but they are not saying.

I agree 100% on that one. Had both not happy with Samsung build quality or support after the purchase (Or lack of I should say)

If anyone has more info than that, I am sure it will come pretty quick. I am sure of that. These guys are on it when it comes to Android :)

Edit: well I guess I type too slow:)

I say just go for the Evo. Nobody knows if the Evo will get the new Sense, but I don't even know if they've even said when a new Android Sense phone will be released. (Unless I missed it). I also haven't heard of any new 4g phones coming to Sprint or Verizon. So who knows how long you'd have to wait for that. As far as Swype, personally I think it's overrated. I've tried Swype, ShapeWriter, and SwiftKey. My personal favorite is ShapeWriter but SwiftKey is pretty awesome too. Since ShapeWriter is out of the market I think I might be switching to SwiftKey. Go with the Evo. You wont be disappointed. The Evo has a huge following right now and the support from developers is absolutely amazing. Far greater than I ever thought it would be to be honest.

I love swype myself but it keeps borking and I have to force close it a lot. I am on the Beta and have sent the reports but have not heard anything back from them. I find myself using the stock HTC keyboard most of the time now. Even after using swiftkey I personally am finding that HTC actually did a good job on that one. I would never know that if I wasn't forced into using it by swype freezing on me all the time.

Ya I was on the Swype Beta for a while too. I was using ShapeWriter before that though. I've been using ShapeWriter since I had my Hero actually. I love it. I wasn't impressed by Swype to be honest. That along with the fact that I felt like it forced closed more than it worked, I ditched it. I know it was under Beta, but I didn't like it either way. What I don't get is how it can be under "Beta", but it comes pre-installed with certain phones... I wonder if there's more to the story.. Anyway, try ShapeWriter, you might like it.

I think shapewriter is off the market

I think shapewriter is off the market now. They removed it a few months ago. I used it before they took it off but forgot to back it up when I flashed one of the Cyanogen nightlies :( Got the APK ?????;)

Ya it's been off since June 20th I believe... I have no such thing (apk)... However, if you check your PM in about 2 minutes I can send you a very nice hello.. ;)

As a former blackberry user, I understand your pain. I picked up the EVO on release day and had very few second thoughts. One thing I do really miss is BBM but google talk is a good alternative. It is really your choice. Remember if you got an EVO you have the 30 day window to return it.

It boggles my mind how there are no decent sports apps for the bberry...

I forgot about the 30 day window as well...thanks

im actually in the exact same position as you (upgrade on oct 1) and i have to admit ive met a few people recently with evos and im gonna have to say go for it. im upgrading from my blackberry and really am only going to miss bbm since i know so many people who use it and i got pretty used to it myself.

I've run the full gambit of smartphones. From the BB Curve, to the Palm Pre, then to the EVO. The EVO is, hands down, the king of the hill! Take the plunge man, you won't have a single regret! The lateset update has removed the 30fps cap, so the Epic doesn't have that over the EVO. The only thing there is the physical keyboard and that's just personal preference. I chose HTC for their build quality and their outstanding support, which you will get neither from Samsung (as I experienced during my darker Instinct days).

I'm also considering the move, but leaning towards waiting. Hoping my Palm Pre can hold me over until the next Android (preferably HTC) device or the next Palm (HP webOS) device.

Hp seems more interested in making WebOS printers than an actual phone. They need to hurry up.
