I'm fairly tech savvy, so I can follow instructions fairly well. One question I have is... is there any downside to rooting your phone? I had a Palm Pre and I'm very familiar with the homebrew community an all of the patches that are available. With the Pre, there wasn't much downside. With the EVO, will I still be able to get OTA updates and other services? Is there anything you CAN'T do once you root your EVO? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

You void your warranty

No. The OTA updates usually break the method we use to root. Meaning you can root it now, but the next patch might fix the root method. Stay away from OTA's

The good news is, once Sprint releases an OTA, shortly after they release the RUU which developers can incorporate into their ROM. This usually takes a day or two after the RUU is released.

Most notably .... take it into a Sprint store for help or repair lol!!! Now the real benefit is what you CAN do once its rooted.

OTA's are not recommended with a Root Rom Could Break Root No one wants that...

For Example go look at the Unrevoked Posts...

First Take a Step back and think what exactly do i want Root for... what do i need to use that requires root?

After that decide whats better for you...

You can always wait for Unrevoked to finish fixing their simple Root app

Just search and research... There is TONS of info on here...

Unrevoked was perfect until the OTA update came along. I just want my phone rooted for wireless tethering and for a few apps that are only available for rooted phones. I don't mind rooting the phone and when an OTA update comes along, rooting it again when they come up with a solution. I just want to make sure that rooting doesn't limit me in any way. If I have to go back to a Sprint store for anything, I could always unroot my phone, right?

Yea but its a hassle...

Just wait for Unrevoked...

Either Go full out or Wait...

Personally Full out Root has been the best thing i've even done on this phone...

The Kernel / Rom I have Flashed Saved my Batteries life lol :p

I have no problem going full out. I think it's relatively easy. Could you point me in the right direction to find the easiest instructions to root? Thanks!

I just got done using this app and did not get the HBOOT version referenced in this thread on XDA: How to start over: Fully rooted stock 1.47.651.1 in one shot (no adb!) - xda-developers

It says I should have version HBOOT-0.76.2000, not 0.79.0000 but I'm still showing 0.79.0000. Please advise.

NVM... Persistence is golden... I got it to go, eventually...

How were you able to update the HBOOT version? I am stuck trying to fix ver 0.79.0000 and uncertain which file to use and how to flash it to the directory.

I just used Simple Root. It took me several tries. It seems to have come down to using wi-fi to visit the Flash site.
