hi, im new to all this thread stuff. so sorry if im doing somthing wrong. but im losing 10% battery every 30-45 minutes. brightness is low, all sync settings are disabled. does anyone know why my battery is draining so much?

These threads may help

But it all depends on how often data refreshes (for facebook and twitter etc), backlight, widgets running, how often the screen is on, amount of data sent, if GPS or 4G is running, etc. Make sure you actually charge is while turned off from time to time and a bump charge may help. Some people discourage bump charging just fyi but what you do is charge it to green, turn it off charge it to green again, turn it on and charge it to green once more. Or a variation of that...

I know when my signal strength is low or non existent, the phone seems to try continual roaming to get a better signal. This tends to drain my battery. How's your signal?

When one is in an area of low signal strength whether on the sprint network or roaming, that phone will use more battery power to find the tower. The better the signal strength then less power is needed to find a tower.

Turn 4g off because that is a power monger...it takes and takes but doesn't give back. Do you have 4g in your area? Check sprint.com to see where 4g is. If your not in a major city then the answer is probably a big fat no to 4g availability.

Retrokevin is right. cut back on how often your apps sync. Look in accounsts and sync menu or go to specific apps you have downloaded. If you use the htc fb friend stream and the facebook app....your duplicating apps. chose one and stop the other from syncing. Limit some email accounts syncing if they are not important.

How long does it take your screen to shut off automatically? Your better off having auto brightness or setting your own brightness level but having your screen auto shut off sooner rather then later. Generally 30 secs to 1 min of non use is a good amount. I have mine set to 2 min.

This is somewhat controversial in the android os world. I use ATK or Advanced Task Killer. I have mine set to "aggressive" auto kill level >> auto kill occurs every 1 hour >> "high" security level (low means more apps will be displayed). The security level determines what applications will be shown in the ATK app and therefore which ones are under your control to be "killed' or kept running. ATK, when installed, has list of system apps in the "ignore list" (you can modify this but it is recommended that only experts in android os do so). Some apps run in the background taking up memory and using power. with ATK you have more control over what is auto killed and what is not. You can "ignore" an app or simply uncheck it.

One problem with this phone is the pre-installed apps (I think partly Google's apps) like "News" and "News and Weather." You probably didn't know this, but they're automatically set up to sync. HTC's Stock app is the same. Turn off HTC Weather if you don't use it. Watch out for Friend Stream, Peep, Facebook for HTC, HTC's Mail app and calendar app, and all your downloaded apps.

Also, make sure to use 4G sparingly (as people suggested), use Wi-Fi when available, especially in low-reception areas. Turn off bluetooth and GPS when not in use.

I would recommend getting a brightness widget to help with brightness being to high at times.

Most importantly, if you really want great battery life, go into Settings -> Mobile network settings -> Turn off Data roaming and Enable always-on mobile data. I have found this last step to help me get well through the day.

Finally, I personally don't see the need for a task killer (unless your phone freezes, but even then I know a work-around).

At this point I have been unplugged for nearly 16 hours and have well over 40% left, with moderate use including Gchat over 4G. I hope some of these suggestions help.

I have actually stopped using ATK task killer. I did some research on this forum and LifeHacker.com, etc etc. While the "jury is out" so to speak on whether or not the task killers are a good idea, I have decided to stop using them. It seems that my 2 years of using mac hasn't unconditioned me of the years of hell I experienced using windows. Anyway, the android OS works differently then a windows environment. The Android OS will manage the memory on it's own without a task killer killing apps automatically or manually. I have noticed a generally better battery life without using a task killer. I obtained this information form LifeHacker.com. I also learned that watchdog is a better program then a task killer because it watches how much memory programs use which allows the phone user to find "bad programs" that are memory hogs and get rid of them if they are constant offenders. Watchdog does not auto kill anything but leaves the phone user in control as to what is a "bad program" or not.

Has the battery life improved on your phone?
did you find out what was causing the battery drain?

I haven't noticed a drastically better battery life since upgrading to GB 2.3 on my evo shift. I have read from places like this forum, lifehacker, etc that GB 2.3 is supposed to be better regarding power management.

I have not had many (knock on wood) of the problems associated with the GB 2.3 update as some others have had. I am running stock android and I am NOT rooted. I have thought about rooting to change my processor to 1ghz since the htc evo shift processor is able to work at 1 ghz but I don't want to brick my phone. Although, I do have an upgrade due through sprint so I guess if it's bricked then I can just upgrade but I like my evo shift.

As far as the power drain on these phones it's the standard sources. Watch what programs and accounts are syncing and how often. If you don't use some of the stock apps like peep, friend stream, etc they shouldn't be syncing but check anyway. If you use facebook for android and friend stream you are duplicating services. Choose one or the other to use. The same goes for twitter, htc has a stock app and I'm sure there are apps you can download. Pick an app stock or third party app and use one only. Turn off gps, wifi, bluetooth, and 4g when not needed. You can stop your phone from using data while roaming. You can set your screen to a lower brightness all the time if you want. Also have your screen auto shut off. The most time I keep my screen on is 2 minutes. I do use auto brightness but I plug my phone in when in the car and when I'm at my macbook or computer at work if needed. I'm not so concerned about conditioning my battery, rather I am concerned about having juice in my battery to run my phone. You can turn off background sync if you want. There is an HTC widget you can put on you home screen(s) to "sync all" at your command rather then have background syncs going on. Also, limit what widgets you have on your screens. Anything you have on your screens the android os has to activate. I use only two of my 7 screens and I have a total of 10 widgets running. you better off going to "all apps" and scrolling to get something when you need it versus running it when you don't.

My home is basically solid concrete so mobile signals are pretty much doa once it reaches my home. I have my phone use my wireless while I'm at home and I turn my wireless off when I leave my home to use the sprint 3g network. Remember, when you mobile is in a area of low signal strength, your phone uses more power to find the sprint tower. When you have stronger signal strength, your phone uses less power to find the sprint tower. The same thing goes for roaming...weaker signal = high power usage / stronger signal = less power usage.

Be watchful of using your android over open wireless networks like starbucks, macdonalds, etc. I read an article from cnet.com (i think, it could have been android central news too)... an IT professor had a device that could track what people are doing on a open network and used his phone to access google calendar, gmail, and the facebook app for android. He found that the android phone did not transmit those previously mentioned services securely. Now I'm not one to schedule porn viewings and when I'm hacking on my google calendar nor am I going to be dumb enough to blast that info in gmail or facebook but...I'm not sure how I feel about my login info being found while I'm scheduling something normal, emailing, or using facebook. I certainly doubt I'm important enough for someone to be interested in my life anyway but wrong place wrong time can occur to any person.

Now I have to turn off 4G n cut back on usage in the earlier part of the day...Wtf happened? I think its the update. Not to mention it is slower it seems like..can n e one help???
