Evo vs Incredible

Hello all. New poster..sorry if I break any rules.

I am a Blackberry Bold user on ATT. My bold is dying and I need a new phone (a few hard resets each day)

I would love to be able to hold for the EVO but Incredible is an option.

I do not live in a 4G area and am still at least 9 months to 1.5 years away.

My question to you is this. Is the EVO without 4G still a phone worth waiting on or given its lack of 4G I should really consider the Incredible.

What does the EVO do with 4G that I will not be able to do without 4G?

Thanks!

And since you're already with AT&T, I would consider the Desire.

Right, well He'd be paying full price for a desire... not many WANT to do that. He'd be paying whatever subsidized price is for any other phone. I'm surprised you didn't recommend an Iphone.

Tried an Iphone..returned it. Was unimpressed. There is a new bold but the coming Android phones are MUCH better than the blackberries.

I am at the end of my contract so can change to a different network w/o too much trouble.

Incredible and Evo really catching my eye. Love the camera HDMI HD video features of the EVO...Just worried about what differences I can expect in an area without 4G coverage.

Nah, you'll be fine Sprint's 3G is damn good provided you're in a good service area. Since Duvi loves pictures... here's a speedtest using my phone with a flash-based speedtest on the browser:

I figured you'd come in and recommend it

Why would he pay full price for the desire? Please enlighten me and school can begin.

Don't mind him, he's still recovering from what I did to him in another thread. I guess I'll have to use lube next time. Not even sure why he posted a "screenshot" (of god knows what device/PC) as I would be embarrassed to get upload speeds like that.

Back to your questions...

If you want to move or don't mind moving to another carrier, I'd make sure your area has the coverage you need for either carrier.

I actually have my $$$ waiting for EVO, but like you, I won't have 4G service.

If you have great service with both and the decision is between those two phones, I'd go with the EVO. I'm not sure how effective the front facing camera will be for me without 4G. I feel I'll get a lot of lag, but aside from that, the device is slick and I may be wrong. Pricing may be cheaper with Sprint (barring you don't have a great discount with Verizon through your employer.)

BECAUSE THE DESIRE IS ONLY AVAILABLE OVERSEAS. There is no guarantee right now that ATT will carry it. If they did, they'd probably **** it up like they did the hideous backflip.

BTW, i hope you got some pain pills for that soar ass of yours.

I hope you don't get the Evo, you'll just come here and bitch that its not as good as the iPhone.

I posted that pic of my Hero. Which is considered a "subpar" android device now. What is high upload speed needed for on a mobile device? Uploading videos to youtube, maybe? Use wifi. For your daily browsing, app use, download speed is much more important. I get better speeds when I tether my laptop anyway. Used it for tethering all day today.

My question about the 4G service more of what features might not work and if they do not work is it enough to even the phone with the Incredible.

For example: One video I saw mention live streaming video blogging. I am assuming that will not work without 4G.

Another mentioned direct uploading to qik....again assuming that will not work.

Another feature mentioned is YouTube HQ videos...again most likely a victim of no 4G.

Mobile Hotspot for other devices....4G feature....

So on.

My local coverage on Att/Verizon/ and Sprint are similar...not a factor in the discussion.

Cost...again not really a factor unless Sprint gets stupid.

Just wanted to focus on 4G and not on who's butt may need some lotion :P

Thanks!

I think you would not see an issue with the front facing camer with 3G at all.. its only a 1.3MP (so its a webcam really) and *should* for video conferencing etc would work adequately as low as 128kbps (first commercial videoconferencing systems were at 64kbps)

and my 2c can be used to get the app that uses that camera..lol

Contrary to you, I am assuming all will work on 3G..

1. live blogging.. a good app could scale the webcam resolution and frame rate to match connection speed...

2. upload to qik ditto

3. What was stated that EVO will default to HQ in 4G areas, not that it will not download HQ videos.. buffering time will be longer thats all

4. Hotspot is stated as both 3G and 4G

looks like the glass may be half full!..:)

The 4G changes the Youtube app to HD quality. You can overcome this change by using wifi, otherwise, it defaults to the typical android youtube app view. You can still watch high quality YouTube videos, you just have to manually open up menu and select play in High Quality.
HD video upload will be blocked on 3G, but will work on wifi.
There is nothing the phone can't do if you have wifi, and if you don't the things you would do on 3G would be such a displeasure, you'd be begging for the wifi.

Aaah...I am liking this forum already...good fun! :)

Its pretty civil, but that guy is just a D!ck. Really, Its nothing like the Precentral forums. I'm willing to help anyone out (just check out the hero hacks forum and I'm plastered over there) and really he just posts useless stuff. Like "Get a Desire" which isn't sold by ATT, so even if the person was up for upgrade, or out of contract, they'd still have to pay full price for it. If it ever did (and thats a big IF), ATT will put restrictions on it if they were going to sell the device. This has to do with them wanting to keep the iphone (their contract with Apple is almost up). Why else do you think they would restrict the Backflip so much? It unique enough for them to sell, doesn't threaten the people who would otherwise buy an iPhone. Its for the teenybopper person who OMGLOLROFLs all over facebook and twitter, and displays a completely different side of Android. Moto went AWOL with the widgets, and thats why that phone is soooooo slow.

To put it in perspective, ATT is last when it comes to adopting "smartphones" It used to be Sprint, but now they seem to be changing that. I'll use WebOS for example. Its now on 2 carriers, and a GSM model has been out for a while. They are getting it, too, but have yet to announce a release date of a phone that was announced January 2009... Same hardware (with the exception of more internal storage and RAM). Android been out for a while. They were last to adopt a model, and what did they choose?, something that the internals match specs of about a year ago.

I had ATT, and if you have good service, good for you. The majority of people, don't. I'm one of those people who had such a bad experience with dropped calls (not even ****ty data speeds), I couldn't wait for my 2 years to lapse. Despite all the ATT stores here, they're dead last in coverage. T-Mo is a close second to them, but at least on campus they have coverage. Sprint and VZW (I've had both here as well) are beyond phenomenal. I'm glad I'm on Sprint as I pay a fraction of what I was paying on VZW and if I were to get a similar device now, I would have been paying more as VZW jacked up their data rates (I was paying just $15).

Perfect Info. Thanks! Not being in a 4G area I just needed some reassurances that the phone would not be severally handicapped by this.

Actually I just needed a hint of a reason to skip the Incredible and wait for the EVO although I am happy to avoid Verizon.

Thanks again!

This will work fine over both 3G and 4G

This is a 4G and WiFi only feature

This one is up in the air but considering the Palm Pre+ does it over 3G on Verizon I would assume the EVO should be able to as well on sprint

Actually, you can watch the Youtube videos in HQ on 3G. I do it on my Hero all the time. You just have to manually select it each time if you're in a 3G area. If you're in a 4G area, it defaults to HQ

Cool I did not know that, I'm still an iPhone user switched a year ago cause I was sick of my BB and Sprint really didn't have any cool phones at the time. Now that the EVO is coming to Sprint I'm ready to make the switch back and enjoy and open platform rather then the lock and key style Apple has.
