All this talk about what the EVO can do, got me to think...

What I was wondering about was, the EVO vs a laptop.

Would you even need a laptop with what the EVO can do, and with the EVO's screen size?

So, I thought I would ask what you all think.... ::smile::

i'm going on a trip for a long weekend soon. i have a little 10" Netbook that i like to bring along. BUT i'm wondering if i need it now that i have my EVO. the EVO is great - but it is nice to have the Netbook form factor when you want to do serious work or web surfing.

sprint tv sucks, cant use wifi, lags hard, pixelation fubar, no way in hell does the evo replace even a netbook,.. cant play dailyshow or southpark studios.. a phone with a purty screen and some bells n whistles bout sums it up until toasted bagel 3.9 update comes out whoop

That can't be a serious question.

It was just a thought, as the EVO can do alot of the stuff. Besides say computer games, and full smoothing flash. (Flash is getting better though)

So, really only games, and a few hard core programs, (IE DvD stuff, and editing)

I can say that with the EVO I consider doing things that I would have pushed off to later until I could get in front of my laptop. Last night, I pulled a file off of SugarSync that is in my Documents folder on my laptop, opened it with Docs2Go, read and edited it and then saved it back to SugarSync - which will in turn sync it to my laptop when I turn it on. Could I do that with most other smartphones on the market? Absolutely, but personally I could never work on the previous smartphone screens that were 3.5" or smaller. In the Inc. was close, but it was too narrow, IMO. The EVO's added screen size makes a world of difference to me.

Smartphones are purely supplemental to Computers, and should be used as such, if you use it as a replacement you will be lacking in many aspects. Now, and for the near future I dont see Smartphones replacing Computers. As of now you should be using your smartphone as "out of office" rather any other way.

my EVO worked great in the car on a 12 hour trip (I wasn't driving), when in the past I have used my laptop with my MiFi card.

See my signature. I got my EVO on a Monday, didn't use my netbook again until the following Sunday. I rarely even turn the thing on anymore.

I've used my nexus as a laptop replacement for 4 months now. Haven't even opened my computer. Why not when your phone can do everything now?

It all depends on your usage habits, too. I mainly use(d) my netbook for reading forums, Engadget, Facebook, Hacker News, and if I was really bored, Reddit. All of these things I can do easily and comfortably on my Evo. It's a lot lighter than my Aspire One, and is a lot easier to use while sitting down. Netbooks are a little awkward as laptops because they aren't wide enough to rest on your legs evenly (or at least that's my experience).

I don't regularly visit sites that require Flash, except YouTube. And even then, the YT experience on the Evo is superior to my Acer. Easier volume control, and no stuttering. There's no reason for me to watch Hulu, etc. on my netbook because I have a media center PC hooked to my HDTV.

The only place I use my netbook outside of the house is school, and I rarely take it there. I'm paying to learn; I'm not going to waste my own money by not paying attention during class. But for that same reason, the Evo wouldn't cut it in this role. The Acer lets me do what I need to do and get it over with, faster than the Evo. That means less time diverting my attention away from the class, and I cannot compromise on that point. But for my ordinary use, the Evo is a solid replacement.

Now that the kids are old enough to stay home alone, my wife and I take frequent weekend trips around New England...just staying Sat nite and back home Sunday. Used to tote the laptop, but the last couple of times said what the hell...I'll just go Evo. No lugging a laptop case and wall wart weight. Sometimes it's nice to have a laptop when you want to check out a new town's sites and eateries, but I'd have to say 95% of the time, the ol' Evo is all I need.

now that I have the "Supersonic" I use my umpc less and less... the Supersonic is 4.3, and the umpc is 4.5... the EVO cant replace my vaio, but for web browsing, movie watching & slingbox watching(once sling releases the android app) I will grab the EVO instead of my vaio...
