I was curious about the resale value of the EVO vs the S3, so I went on ebay and did the following searches.

Sprint EVO LTE
Used only
Sold items only
Clean ESN only.

Repeated the search for "Sprint Galaxy S3" and restricted it to 16G phones. Color didn't matter.

From sold items only, it appears that the EVO sells between $350-$400 for a used phone w/ clean ESN. The S3 (16g model) sells for $450-$500. Interesting that there are a ton of bad ESN units on ebay, do people just get the phone to sell it and never pay the bill?

Anyway, for phones that cost $200 new, the S3 is holding it's value better, at least on ebay. This could just be because it's the newer kid on the block?

There are three different possibilities.

1. They buy the phone but don't pay the bill leading to the carrier deactivating it.

2. People claim the phone is lost/stolen and file an insurance claim but later find it. Phone is no good then. Also, people fraudulently make claims. This essentially means the phone is still active on another account.

3. The phones are stolen.

People still buy them because sometimes you can still activate the phone on like MetroPCS as their system might not recognize it.

Other people buy them to use as a WiFi only device. Think of it as an equivalent of an iPod Touch. You can still do quite a lot with the phone without cellular service.
