From the realm of unsubstanciated rumors comes this little gem...

I have a business rep that provides all of our phones, and he mentioned that it was discussed to cap download and upload speeds on the EVO to provide the best customer experience at launch.

Caps were said to be set at 4mbits down and 1mbit up.

Now, for the reason why I believe this...

I was using a Sprint Overdrive in Dallas, TX about three weeks ago and I was getting 6mbit down speeds every single time I tested it. I have since seen some people in Dallas testing the EVO's speed and getting at most 3.5 or 3.6 mbits.

I can see this being an issue at launch with an network that has not been tested with thousands of new customers killing the network. Anywho, I guess we'll see....

As far as I know, the only thing they capped is the upload. The download remains uncapped. We shall find out.

While this may trigger a backlash, you gotta wonder what app needs more than 4Mbps for a single device.

I have a 7Mbps cable connection at home but only need 4Mbps for Netflix/Hulu streaming, etc. I'd step down to 4Mbps if I could get it for less, but can't. For a single device, there just isnt a need to have more than 4Mbps for most users, especially a mobile device.

Bloggers will go hysterical in the end of any kind of capping. Even if unjustified, it may backfire for Sprint and Evo sales. Will be surprised if they do it. I could see 'managing' the bandwitch _when_ a site has a lot of load, but not blanket performance caps in all cases.

The "proof" is in the result comparisons between phone and stand-alone 4g devices. Why the discrepancy other than a cap?

I don't know what time of day the test was done but if it were during the hours when most people were likely to use it the bandwidth could have been limiting the DL speed. Now, try that same test about 4AM and let us know. Compare side-by-side the mifi device to the Evo.
