My phone has major issues with 4G, so I'm either exchanging or returning it. I have two notes on my account from VZW customer service. Local VZW store recently pulled the sim card and factory reset it.

1. If I exchange, do I have to pay the $35 restocking fee?
2. If I return, do I have to pay the restocking fee, and does it end my new 2 year contract?
3. If I exchange and continue to have issues, is a return still possible?
4. With respect to restocking fees, is VZW flexible with them? I will seriously leave to another carrier if they may me pay to return this phone after all the trouble it's caused.

They will push for the 35 restocking fee. They even made me pay it when I returned my Rezound which was broke. They won't make you pay it if you exchange the phone for the same model. Just remember, one time exchange and return. You might get away with it over the phone support vs the store.

They will reset your upgrade to the original date.

I don't think Verizon will care if you leave. So you can threaten until you're blue in the face.

Good luck!

So why would anyone who is experiencing problems exchange the Nexus and risk getting another defective device or at least one that misbehaves in their area? Seems like it would be smarter to return and then repurchase at a later date.

I can't answer that question because I don't know if Verizon marks your account for your returned device. I returned two Nexus units and currently on number three. So far everything is working perfect with this one.

They never once questioned me exchanging until I was happy. That might have been because I bought the phone outright, who knows.

Ask Verizon how they handle that.

There ya go. If you are really going to switch carriers over a $35 fee that seems like you should have waited and saw what the phone was like before taking the plunge.

1. Not if the phone is defective
2. Yes and yes
3. Not sure - ask at the store
4. Not in store. Might be able to beg a credit out of customer service

If you are having tech problems you might be able to get out of the fee. Just make sure to explain what the situation is when you get there: there is a difference between an EXCHANGE based on simple customer desire/preferences to get a different phone, and a replacement where something is WRONG with the phone to the point that it is broken/defective/unusable.
