Hi folks,

First time in here. The wife and I are just getting into seeing if we're going to cut the cord, and I purchased a Mi box 2 days ago. On paper this thing certainly seems to have the horsepower to do what we need to do, which is basically run PlayStation Vue for cable channels and hdhomerun for locals, and of course Netflix. Btw we do NOT have a 4K TV so that doesn't apply. The setup was painless, but there's something very curious about the Box. The picture in PlayStation Vue is good, but it's not absolutely crystal clear, almost like there's a very thin haze on the picture, or we're looking at old school SD. I would not call it lag or stuttering it's not that. However, if I cast PlayStation Vue from my tablet or phone through the Mi box to the TV, the picture is absolutely positively crystal clear. For the life of me I've checked all the settings and can't figure this one out. I'm not a newbie or someone who doesn't understand tech, but this one has me stumped. Anybody have a clue? We don't need something like the Nvidia Shield TV, cause we're not gamers and I can't see spending $200 on a TV box. We would consider a $20 bump up to Fire TV, but everything I read says you would do best with that if you're heavily into Amazon which, although we order from them, we're not even Prime members. But if the Firebox somehow has improved internals over this Mi box then we may have to go that route.

Edit:

I had packed it back in the box, but pulled it back out to try one more time. This time, I signed us up for a Sling trial, and even though the Sling Android app wouldn't let me cast to the Mi box, the picture was essentially the same. To clarify what it looks like, it's the difference between a movie shot on film and clear reality TV. So, this makes me think it's either the Android TV software itself, or the apps that are written for Android TV. The reason I say that is in casting the PS Vue to the box, the logo splash screen is definitely, if slightly, different than the PS Vue app on the box itself. If someone could clarify that would be great, because right now we're looking at probably going with the Fire TV box because reviews have been great for that. I just can't understand how casting an app to the box looks better then using the actual apps in the box itself.

Any help would be appreciated, thanks!

Okay, for those that have viewed this thread, I think I have the answer. In this video, Lon states that the Mi box has an inferior MPEG codec for playing back over-the-air broadcast and cable broadcast:

So, even though it can stream HD Homerun and things like PS Vue, it is not capable of producing crystal clear picture quality from those sources. Guess that settles it...

Another update, tried the Fire TV stick, still was not working that well. We now have the Amazon Fire TV box and the picture is great.
