Is there a way of plugging in my 1TB ext drive into my HTC Desire directly? I would assume sort of USB adapter is required.

Yes an A-B usb printer type of cable then a male to male connector that would connect to your normal micro usb cable.
Then you would need to Root the phone, and find a rom that would allow that kind of file transfer.
