Facebook goes grey

Ever since switching to lollipop the Facebook app switches over to a grey screen randomly and quite often. I then need to exit and come back to app.

Might be a bug with the Facebook app (it's been quite buggy for the past couple of updates, mostly with battery drains). But I'd try the following?
1) Go to Application Manager, find Facebook, and clear cache and data (you'll need to re-login)
2) If that doesn't work, uninstall the app, reboot your phone, re-install.

If none of that works, it's almost definitely a compatibility issue with the app and you should report it to the authorities (and by authorities I mean using the REPORT A PROBLEM button from your Facebook app's settings.

Which device do you have? Does this occur on both wi-fi and mobile data?

The Facebook app has been wonky lately. I uninstalled it on my Nexus 5 and Nexus 7 because it was inexplicably using an inordinate amount of battery, even with Video Autoplay off and Data Refresh set to manual. I'm just using the mobile web interface for now, and waiting to see if they fix the app problem some time soon.

On the s5 for mobile data. I'll need to try the cache and data clean and re-login.

This lollipop update is the worst battery killer ever.

Have you factory-reset your phone yet? That's really good practice after an update like this one.
