Facebook links in messenger won't open in Facebook app

For some reason whenever I click a link to a Facebook post from messenger it opens in the messenger browser. I want all Facebook links to open in the app. Changing the settings in application manager to set Facebook as the default doesn't do anything. No matter what both apps are set on it still opens links in the messenger browser. I asked this question as a reply to something else previously but realized i was in an LG specific forum and I've got a Galaxy S6 running 7.0 nougat

Messenger version 175.0.0.23.81
Facebook version 181.0.0.36.82

Any suggestions?

Are you talking about Facebook Messenger, or the stock messaging app? Open that app and look at its settings menu -- is there an option there to open links in app? If so, turn that off.

I'm referring to Facebook messenger, not the stock messaging app. I've got 3 options for opening links:

via this app
always ask
in other app

I get the same result no matter which I set it to. It keeps opening in the messenger browser and not the regular Facebook app. I also have my regular Facebook app set to be the default for all Facebook supported urls. So frustrating.

You probably already tried this since you mentioned you were in the app manager, but go to Settings>App, tap Menu, then Reset All App Preferences, and see if the problem persists. Be aware, though, that this will cause the minor inconvenience of re-enabling any app you disabled.
