Facebook Messenger App Icon message indicator won't go away. How can I get it off?

Facebook Messenger App Icon message indicator wont go away.

Facebook Messenger App Icon message indicator wont go away.
The message icon still shows a "1" like I have an unread message. I have done the "mark all read" on my laptop windows facebook messenger several times, logged in and out and no change.
I have uninstalled the app on android 5.1.1 on my new Note 5, cleared the cache and nothing works.
I've logged in and out, did a force stop, used the Force, rebooted and still no change.
I've searched here and the net and not found a trick that will work. It's driving me crazy....er.
The icon will also not change to 2, 3 or any other number. I've reported it to facebook but they usually never reply.

Any ideas on how to get the notification on the icon to return to zero? Thanks.

Have you checked your 'OTHERS' inbox? Maybe there's a message waiting there... Or have you tried in different launchers? I remember Apex and Nova having issues at some point with Whatsapp counters, for instance. And it wasn't necessarily Whatsapp's fault because the counters worked OK in TouchWiz.

I've never switched launchers. I'm still on the stock touchwiz.
I dont know exactly what you mean by "others" inbox. On the app or on the pc? I've checked all the folders in messenger on the pc and marked all "as read" and the icon still hasnt changed. There were 8 messages in "Filtered" messages but it didnt seem to effect the icon. Thanks for trying

I think they changed it. It's on the Facebook site (through the Facebook page; I don't see it on messenger.com or on the Messenger app), under Messages, now it's called 'Message Requests'.

I haven't used TouchWiz in a while, so maybe it's a TouchWiz issue? Have you tried booting your phone in Safe Mode and see if that helps?

Yes, tried that per your suggestion. Didnt fix anything I also cleared data with no change.

OK, my next suggestion would be to try a different launcher (one that supports unread counters, of course) and see if the count is still there. I really can't think of anything else since you've already cleared the app's cache/data and even uninstalled/re-installed it.

If the problem is there in a different launcher, then it's definitely a Messenger issue (one that I don't have and haven't seen reports of, so maybe it's something in your account flagging a new message). Then you'd have to contact FB. They may not respond, but they DO include fixes on their app updates fairly soon (with a few exceptions, like the 'blocked screen corner' bug that hasn't been squashed).

Ok, I solved the issue. I had uninstalled a few times, see above. A notification bubble message about chat heads in messenger popped up on my screen. After reading it the app message icon went to zero. I dont know if it's a standard message or facebook sent it to me intentionally. I was also messing around in messenger and sending messages back and fourth. I've turn chatheads on and off a few times before and nothing changed. This time it was an official message from the app about using chatheads that I read and made the app icon go back to zero. It all happened so fast that I'm not sure what exactly fixed it. Thanks for the help.

Oh, wow! So it might have been the chat heads message being stuck then. Weird! But glad it got resolved!

BTW, chat heads have been a PITA lately. If you use Messenger and you see that a region near the top-left corner of your phone stops responding to touch, it's likely the Messenger app acting up. It doesn't always happen, and it can happen even if the chat head isn't floating around, but when it does, force-stopping the Messenger app clears the problem.

I have this problem right now actually. So I'll try uninstalling the app and re-installing to see if that will work for me.

On my Samsung Note 8 if I tap and hold the icon when there is a "1" showing it gives me the option to "clear badge". That works. Maybe it works on other Android devices?

Just had this thing stuck in Facebook app.
Samsung galaxy s8.
Open settings, apps, go to Facebook and messenger apps, storage - clear cache and clear data.
Open apps one by one, click trough inital settings and it refreshed somehow, just one of regular conversations showed up as unread.

You also have to look at message requests and stuff. Crazy app.

I have a Galaxy Note 8. I had the same problem only mine said that I had 4 unread messages, when I didn't.

I saw that I had 4 group chat messages still showing in the group's area. I figured that can't be a coincidence.

So I clicked on one to open it.

Then I clicked on the person's Avatar at the top of the conversation, that started the group conversation, and that took me to another page.

In the upper right corner there's 3 vertical dots.

I clicked that and there was an option to delete the conversation.

I did that for the other 3 and that resolved the 4 unread messages indicator.

FINALLY! I found the way to remove these notifications!

I could not find a way to do it on the app, BUT - go to the online version of the messenger app at www.messenger.com, on the top left, there's a settings/cogwheel icon, click on it. In the dropdown list, click "Unread Threads". THERE THEY ARE!! Read them and/or delete them, and watch them go away as notifications on your phone.
