Facebook Messenger not working on samsung galaxy s8

Despite the fact that my phone is connected to the internet, Facebook messenger continually has trouble connecting - it lags behind, sometimes not receiving messages until a while after they've been sent and not sending messages. I've tried restarting, force stopping, clearing the cache, but nothing has been working. The Internet works fine on my other apps. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Any time I see a problem like this, I say it's probably the Facebook app. And I'm usually right. (The site is very well thought out, as far as operation goes - I don't like the UI, but that just me.) The app? Over the years, both Facebook and Facebook messenger have had versions Zuckerberg should be ashamed of. I'm sure he doesn't have his hand in the code any more, but still - he has a brand to protect. Wait for the next update.

I found the FB Messenger app to be quite a resource hog. I ditched it an use the "lite" version instead. It's a lot leaner.
