Factory reset

So I went a little app crazy when I first got the phone and now something is slowing my phone down and I don't know what. I was hoping to do a factory reset and start fresh... My questions are:

1) Is there any negative side effect from doing a factory reset?

2) if I have an sd card in place, will a factory reset erase the sd card also?

1. The only "negative" effect would be having to set everything up again.
2. I would take it out just in case

I factory reset my phone and it did nothing to the sd card. Ymmv
